I have  had 2 back operations in the past three years.Because of this I now go to a pain managment dr every month and I required to take a drug test every month. Until now I never worried about passing now I'm not sure. Would anyone know if 1 week is long  enough to pass this trst

I am also in PM and signed a contract. I too endure random urine screens. Recently, my Chocolate Labrador experiences severe anxiety and was given Xanax by the vet. He is terrible when it comes taking medications orally. I have had to crush them as he takes 2 1 mg tablets, and mix it into his food. I have an appointment on the 27th, and I'm a little concerned that I may have had some accidental exposure when preparing the dogs meds. The last time I prepped his meds was about 3 days ago on the 10th, so I'm hoping what little bit I may have been exposed to will be out of my system enough by then to pass the cutoff level. The research I have done indicates that most drugs will take about 5-7 half lives to clear urine. Xanax has a 12 hour half life which simply means that in a healthy human with a normal metabolism, the urine should be clean of Xanax in no more than about 4 days. I did also find; however, a site that stated 10 days for occasional use and as much as 42 days for chronic use. There are so many variables that need to be considered. I would suggest you drink at least 1 gallon of water daily to flush your system, and eat 5 or 6 small meals as this boost metabolic rate. I hope this helps you. Good luck!

I didn't smoke MJ. Studies show the pharmacuetical use the thc from MJ to make the pain meds. Studies also show that the thc in MJ helps tremedously which is why they decided to make it legal in some states. Even terminal cancer patients take the "medical Mj". As well as their pain meds.  I understand the DEA keeps a record of every script written. If you take too long to fill it you are accused of wrong doing. If you lose it, its stolen. You drop them by accident you are accused of wrong doing.  Its best to tell the PM nurse that you have taken a drug anti hystimine etc which is hard where I go because you take the UA. First.  Yet telling before they accuse you is better explaining your situation.

Your wise beyond your years(sorta). I'm in Illinois, but own property in Texas(birth state) and visit often.I just wanted to say your take on the whole MJ thing is very consistent with my thought patten. Just nice to see/read about like minded folks.
PS  I'm a 46yo non smoker, that occasionally has to partake for medicinal purposes.
You go gurl!!

Hi,

I go to a PM dr and have a signed contract also. I've been going to him for about 3 yrs, and take random tests also. during this time, I failed one because I took some valium that was given to me by my previous dr. It did show up but I have a strong trust relationship with my dr. They did tell me that I cannot take any  medications like that, that were not on my medications list. I think if you have a good relationship with your dr. and you explain the circumstances to them, they would probably let it slide if you havent' had any test failures in the past. When I first started going to my dr. in 2007 he told me that one of the most important factors in pain management was trust between the patient and dr.

Good Luck,

I currently go to a pain managment clinic for hip pain.  I too had to sign a contract.  They use saliva tests mainly.  They have never been right.  I have come back negative twice while taking MS Contin 3x day, and one time I came back positive for morphine (MS Contin), Heroin (6-Acetlymorphine), Codine, and Oxymorphone.  It took almost 2 months for the office to let me know of these results.

I am only taking MS Contin!!!  Very upset and confused.  I have never even seen Heroin.  I had a urine screening done at the hospital next door, it tested positive for opiates, but even though the script for the test said to confirm postive results....of course the hospital didn't confirm the test.  It is a workers comp claim and now they know, and am waiting to see if I am getting fired.

First of all, you will have to fess up to yourself a little bit.  Although there were extenuating circumstances, you did break your contract and so now it's time to figure out the consequences of that.

If there will be xanax in your system, I agree that it's better to tell your doctor in advance rather than wait for him to find out on the test.  But depending on what type of doctor he is, the consequences still may be drastic.  So it might be a good idea to get a bit emotionally prepared for that.

We all have our "screw ups" in life- I'm the last one to throw stones, although I got most of them out of my system in my 20s.  Take a deep breath and walk in there and deal with it, but don't compound it by trying to cover it up.

My Dr. requires a UA at each visit. Not sure if they actually send it in or not, but they collect urine at every visit according to the signs in the office. I do not go to a "pain clinic". I go to the most reputable, hardest to get into pain specialist in town.

I would google "how long does xanax stay in your system" to answer your question. There is a lot of information online. I do, however, egree with the previous posters. Your best bet may be to honestly talk to your doc and explain the situation.

Good luck!

I would recommend copying your message and pasting it as a new question in the forum.  It will get more replies there.

Personally I'm all for MJ for people who can use it.  I've never tried it for pain and only tried it ever a few times a while ago.  It was pretty harsh on my lungs.  I am somewhat interested in the pill form of it although my doctor was actually talking about it and said it's not as effective as opiate pain meds.

The last time I took a UA they found a trace of thc, and warned me that if found again? I would be released. I was totally honest with my PM Doctor which he appeared to appreciate greatly. It's not so much a personal attact against me for smoking a little MJ which is rare, but they could lose their license, because we live in a redneck state Texas.

They were very curious as to what effects the mj had on me, and I explained it helped me a great deal. I apologized, and promised I would not do it again, and I haven't, although I want to, and have not. I will not put my PM Doctor in a position like this again. I will see him on the 26th, and so hope there is no more thc in my system. Please note that is you lose a good deal od weight? The thc may show up again, because it is stored in the fat cells. Most places especially in States like Texas? You do have to sign a contract not to abuse,  Doctor shop, or use other narcotics, or illicit drugs. I've been with this Clinic for 4 years, and this was the first time tested for thc. I personally think it should be legal for medical use, because it does help sometimes better than the narcotics. I feel it's big Pharma that wants to keep this herb illegal, because it cuts into their profits on anti-emetics, and other pain medications. I'm just so surprised at how some still demonize this wonderful herb. Sadly, we still have some who actully believe the old Reefer Madness spill. In all my years of Nursing? I've never ever observed anyone od on MJ. Alcohol is probably the worst chemical abused. Having not smoked in the past? I can't believe it is portrayed as such an evil drug. I just can't believe how much it really helps with pain, nausea, and increasing the appetite. I have a great deal of trouble gaining weight, and have even gotten down to 78 lbs before, and I'm 5'4". How do others feel about legalizing this herb? Sincerely Franny

I have been in pain management for8 months now and have a contract.  I have been asked to take a urine test 3 times randomly but not on every visit.  I think if you explain what happend to your doctor and you are honest and have not had any previous issues you should be fine.  Or you could always reschedule your appointment and wait for it to work its way out of your system.

Sorry Goddess, I actually disagree with you on this one.  There are a lot of people on here that are on signed pain contracts and have to take urine tests, or have pill counts.  You will see people on here that fail a urine test and they lose their pain doctor because of it.  For some reason a lot of people that use fentanyl seem to not keep that medication in their system and fail a urine test and lose their doctor.  Like I said you will unfortunately see that a lot on this group.  I do not have a doctor that has a signed pain contract her in the KC area, but I have three friends on this site that have to take urine tests, randomly due to their pain mangement doctor requires it.  So, please feel lucky like I do that you don't have to worry about it because Tuck has said it's like 70% of people taking urine tests have false negative results and once they fail a urine test a lot of pain management doctor will NOT keep them and it makes the patient scramble to find another pain doctor that will take them on.  I'm worried about tree due to the fact that it is against the law to take anyone else's medication and I'm just not sure how long the medicine will stay in the system.  It was really an unfortunate situation that he or she should not have done.

As far as it being an insurance or trust issue, I'm not sure but I just think it is the pain management company policy.  It is a written policy that I know of but I'm not sure if it's insurance or not.  Please don't feel bad about it I also had no idea about it until I joined this med group!

Tree - can I ask you why your doctor is asking for a drug test? This does not sound like normal behavior for a pain management doctor. I see a pain management specialist and use patches and baclofen I am not required to take a drug test. Is this an insurance thing or a trust issue? I'm sorry if this comes across stupid but I really just don't understand why...

Sorry to hear about the bad news with your mother.  Our thoughts are with you.  First, did you take 3mg of Xanax at one time?  That's a lot of Xanax, especially if you normally don't take it, so first I'm glad you are ok.  I have no idea how long Xanax stays in your system, but I'd do a couple of things.  You could call your pain doctor and explain the situation with your mother and what happened?  Call your local pharmacist and ask them how long the medication lasts in your system, or even go on line and research it.  I think you should tell your dr. what happened, but I know a lot of people will not do that.  I really hope the drug test comes out ok, but I do think it may still be in your system.

Good luck, and please let us know how your doing, we are here for your support with your mother and anything else we can do.
