ADHD MEDS

My 7 year old is on Concerta for ADHD, and it curbs her appetite tremendously. She has an appointment Saturday with her Pediatrician, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is an ADHD med that doesnt curb appetites so bad or at all for that matter. I understand that it is a stimulant and that is just what they do, but any ideas or comments would help.

I have 7 and 9 year old boys with severe ADHD and we have tried lots of meds because they metabolize them so fast and here is my suggestion for you, try to fix a big breakfast in the morning or use like pediasure or ensure or carnation instant breakfast drinks.  You should have at least a half hour after she takes her meds to get food in.  Then when she starts coming off the meds late afternoon early evening, try to have lots of snacks around like baby carrots with ranch dip, or graham crackers with peanut butter and things like that.  As soon as the meds are out of my boys' systems they raid the kitchen continously until they go to bed!  If you have a good doctor, he or she will monitor her weight at every appointment.  Try not to worry too much unless she really drops weight and remember you will have opportunities to get the right nutrition into her.  You could also move back the time you usually have supper so that her appetite is coming back.

Anodynes ingested at that age have permanent effects on metabolism and cognitive abilities.

Dumb teachers need to KNOW THIS and stop telling parents that little kids have ADHD!!!

Thank you mommybare. I dont know why I havent tried that to start with. I will start doing that. I may do one in the morning and one at bedtime for her and one at bedtime for her 9 year old sister that is on the same meds. The oldest still eats, but still not enough I dont think. But my youngest didnt touch her dinner last night. She really worries me sometimes. I will definitely start pediasure or something like that. Maybe she can start gaining weight. She just weighed in at the Doc on Saturday and only weighs 47 pounds. Skinny minnie!!! Thanks again.

I also have a seven year old on concerta, I was also worring about his appetite. I use supplemental drinks to make sure he is getting proper nutrients. I have tried different meds but with the same effect. Some drink ideas ( pedisure, ensure, or carnation instant breakfast). Hopefully this helps.
