Pain behind the knee-4 year old

I have a 4 year old who has been complaining about pain behind his knee.  It was accompanied by a fever.  Today, he has no fever, but will cry when he moves his leg the wrong way.  He is an extremely healthy and active kid, so for him to not want to move around because of pain is a bit odd.  I was told that growing pains happen at this age, but mostly at night.  This has been ongoing for 2 days now from the minute he wakes up until he falls asleep.  Any suggestions?

My son has been complaining of pain behind his knee's on/off for the last 2 years ( he will be 4 in June) he woke up a 3am this morning complaining/crying again today, so I am now very worried and searching the net. He says it hurts right in behind the knee cap, I rub his calf muscle and quad and these do not hurt nor feel tight, I rub the knee cap, shin & femur and these do not hurt, I can extend and flex his leg and it is fine, only pain is right in behind the knee...I will be taking him to our doctor today (it is only 4am here in New Zealand so will go as soon as the medical centre opens) but I will definately be pushing the issue to be referred to a specialist, have an x-rays and blood tests, afterall it is causing so much discomfort and I as a mother need to make sure it is nothing serious, I would love for the specialists to do the tests and find nothing but a lack of vitamins and tell me Im a slack cook and to cut out processed foods and feed them more balanced meals, dont take no for an answer...there are serious conditions that can damage our children and after all, a mother knows best-we all know when something is worng with our kiddies so go with your instinct and make certain it is nothing seriously instead of letting the Dr fobb your worries off as "growing pains" ...check out this website http://www.buzzle.com/articles/knee-pain-in-children.html
Cheers

Rheumatoid Arthritis....... is something else that has the signs and I know most people think "arthritis in kids no way" but kids do it it as well my 3yr old was just tested for it, he has been dealing with pain in the back of his knee for months now waking up in the middle of the night screaming lasting 15-45min til he falls back to sleep a few times in the day where he is limping cant put his foot flat on the ground and falling over, I feel helpless as a parent knowing there is nothing I can do to help him other then pain meds.

Could be Juvenile Arthritis. Get a copy of Dr Lehman 's book "It's Not Just Growing Pains" for an in-depth look at what could be wrong. Not many doctors seem to even consider the possibility of arthritis or other rheumatic disease.
