I saw this and wanted to say, pica (craving ice) can be a sign of anemia.
As to hair falling out, I went through a spell where my hair got thinner and thinner and I was FREAKING out. All the doctors said I was not anemic. Finally I went to an intergrated doctor and she tested my ferritin. The ferritin was a 5 and normal is 20-150. I was put on iron inspite of my normal iron tests and in 3 months my hair started to grow thicker and I amstill on the iron and still my hair is doing better and better.

I am not allowed to tell you what to take. We can only say what we ourselves do. Seriously, if you have any issues ask your doctor. You can call your pharmacist too and ask their opinion.
If you want to increase iron without pills you can drink orange juice while you eat lots of greens. Your best bet is red meat and orange juice as far as food goes.

so should i just TRY a multiviatamin first... i havent really been on them in my life.. it seems i take care of everyone but myself. im a super busy mom so maybe if i just get my normal 18mg a day it will help. I read somewhere that adults only need 45mg at the most... maybe i got my info at the wrong place. okay im going to check out these links. thank you so much!! :)

Well the only thing is, I am not a doctor so if you were to have a problem and your body made too much iron that is not good either. I take nature made iron. You can get it at walmart. 65 mg of iron =325 ferrous sulfate. This is what the bottle says. I take one a day.
You really should not a multi with iron with it though.
Hmmmm, if your hair is dry it very well may be thyroid or hormone like margypops said. I will send you links to look in a few min.

is there a safe over the counter iron supplement i could take? i have no insurance at the moment so im kinda stuck. im taking a womens daily vitamin but i doubt thats all i need. i havent breastfed since my youngest was 6 months old. When i mean massive amounts i mean like after wash my hair and comb it out im pulling out 2 or 3 huge brush fulls of hair and when im actually taking a shower a ton comes out too. my hair texture is completly different then it used to be too. ive got extremely curly hair but ive never in my life had this much problem with the dry-ness of it... i hope this makes sense and all ties together. i cant see a doctor right now so im desperate :(

Are you breastfeeding?  Or were you?  I know when you are pregnant you don't shed skin cells or hair like you normally do, so when you have the baby it's crazy how much you lose.  Also, like when I greatly decreased in nursing my son, my hair started to shed a LOT more than usual.  It scared me at first, but it's evened out now.  I've heard of those connections with iron too though.  So it might be that.  And by massive amounts do you mean in clumps?  Or like when you run your hand through your hair?  Cause if it's like balding in clumps sort of thing I'd think it to be more thyroid and hormonal rather than stress related.  As you say, you're sort of used to all the stress!  I mean who wouldn't be with 3 boys to take care of!!  Good luck :)
