Ultrasound Question

I'm currently 31 weeks pregnant - first baby (second pregnancy - miscarried at 17 weeks), 39 years old.  Did not have screening tests but did have detailed U/S at 18 weeks (all good) - and had U/S at 24 and 28 weeks.  The U/S beginning at 24 weeks and every 4 weeks after that are to check for growth due to my history of chronic hypertension.  While the fear was that the baby could become growth restricted, he actually is measuing big which I am told is good.  The 24 week U/S was fine and the 28 week seemed to be fine until I went for a follow up with my doctor a couple of days ago and he mentioned the following...He said that he hated to even say anything because he knew it would make me worry (and he was right) but that he felt the obligation to mention the fact the U/S tech noted something she saw regarding the front lobe of the brain.  He then said he reviewed the U/S and did not see anything abnormal BUT he wants to send me to a high risk doctor for a follow up U/S just to be sure everything is ok.  Now, of course you will ask me, what exactly did the tech see, right??  Well, the combination of being suprised, scared and exhausted (as my appt was after the end of a long work day) I failed to get anything more specific - ugh.  Of course, I'm worried sick and am waiting in antiticipation of my follow up U/S this week.  Sadly, I don't even know what my question is of this group...other than, does it sound like I should be scared out of my mind - like I am?  Or, has anyone experienced anything similar.  I hesitate to even hit "Post Question" on this one but I figure at least someone out there has been in my shoes before...wanting to kick their own behind for not asking more questions and being worried.

Thanks so much for your responses.  We went for our follow up u/s with a high risk doctor and everything is completely normal.  Thank God, prayers answered.  I guess I should get used to worrying about my little man...this is only the beginning of worrying about his well being for the rest of his life :-)

Honestly, I would just call your doctor and whoever else looked at your ultrasound and ask some questions. I mean if you are that concerned that something is wrong. Its probably not a big deal, for if it were your doctor most likely would have been more concerned. Or would have taken some sort of immediate action :) Your baby is probably just fine.

Sounds weird: a tech saw something but not the MD?

I agree: give them a call to know exactly what was seen on the ultrasound. High risks ob-gyn are the best and will know to tell you what's going on exactly.

It's probably nothing, but yes I would worry as well. Good luck!!

First, congrats on this pregnancy!!  I know it is only normal to worry and I probably would too, but really try not to.  Keep in mind that only the tech noticed something and the doctor reviewed the ultrasound and thought everything was fine.  So the biggest likelihood is that your little man is just perfect.  Also, it would be somewhat unusual for the frontal lobe to look fine at 18 weeks and show problems now.  My mom always said not to waste your worry.  When everything turns out fine, all of this current worry will have been for nothing - so think positive.

Also, don't beat yourself up about not asking more. It is perfectly understandable why you didn't (heck, I forget to ask much more mundane questions at some visits) and you can always call the office and ask for more information via phone, if you really want to know.

Good luck with your follow up u/s and keep us all posted
