Hi I was like you - I always had irregular cycles till my doctor put me on birth control to regulate my period. After being on them for almost 15 years I stopped when my husband and I decided to start trying for a baby. Guess what my period went back to being irregular again! I did two things -I downloaded an app on my phone Period Tracker which let me track my period so I could estimate the average cycle length and I also got ovulation kits to get an idea when I was ovulating. Between the two I got an idea when would be the ideal time.  Funnily, the months we focused and tried - nothing happened. I conceived the month I didn't have time to worry about it. We were traveling and I wanted to focus on just enjoying myself. I was pretty sure nothing would happen since our schedules were all messed up and voila it did! So there is really some truth in stress getting in the way. please don't worry - just relax and enjoy the experience. I know it's easier said than done but try to take your mind off baby making while you're in the "act". Make sure you're having a good time as a woman's orgasm is said to help things along ;)  in my personal opinion, having sex at night helps as the sperm stays inside longer and has more time to swim but  that's just my thought. good luck.. It will happen.

You need to figured out why your period is 38 days? And more importantly when you ovulate. You conceive around ovulation day. (So the best time to conceive is when you ovulate).

Basically you need to know if it takes you longer to ovulate, instead of the average 14 days you may ovulate on day 24. Or maybe you do ovulate on day 14 and your second phase is longer that the average 14 days.

I will buy a 30 days ovulation kid. And I will start to test for ovulation around day 10 of your cycle. Once the ovulation stick turn out positive you usually ovulate in the next 48 hours. You should try to conceive in this 48-72 hours. (The egg lives about 24 hour) (The sperms can live few days) (So even if you try few days before your ovulation you can still get pregnant)

Sometimes in case similar to yours, some doctors will prescribe "CLOMID" and ovulation drug that trigs ovulation. Clomid should help your period to get regular and make it easy to conceive.

Good luck

start taking your temperature first thing in the morning with a basal thermometer at the same time every day.  When there is a peak, that's a possible indication of ovulation, which is the best time.  Ovulation predictor kits are great as well. My periods were crazy, except I was getting it every 21-24 days.  Opposite issue.  But my obgyn took bloodwork and told me that I was still ovulating.  No pregnancy yet for me though.  There are many sights on OPKs and Basal Temperature.  Good luck.
