Is it one or is two?

This is my ultrasound photo at 6 weeks 1 day.  It was done at a womens care center so it is not diagnostic and the nurse cannot say anything.  It is a free ultrasound just to show you the baby.  When the ultrasound was done, the nurse who did it asked if my doctor would do an early ultrasound and if he was not going to, she said come back in a few weeks and she would do another one.  She said they usually only do one per pregnancy but she would not have a problem doing another one.  It was all a little strange.  During the ultrasound I could see two bumps, but I didn't ask any questions since it is undiagnostic. I would just like some opinions on what anyone else thinks, is there one or two?

I will be glad to e-mail you the corrected image tomorrow when I get to work.  The doctor that read your ultrasound has been doing this for over 20 years, she reads over 25 ultrasounds a day everyday.  I'm not sure if she's a perinatologist or what her title is but she knows a lot about reading ultrasounds and scans this is her life.  I'm sure everything is okay, I would not let the post from Yinzer scare you or have you worring.  I would def request another ultrasound.  Also the doctor told me to tell you not to go to those places that do ultrasound like you had done, they set something on the ultrasound machine too high (I can't remember exactly what she was saying) and if you get too many of them it's not good for the growing fetus.

Thank you so much for your input, I will show my doctor the ultrasound and I hope he will have me do another one where I can actually ask the tech questions.  I had my hcg levels tested at 9dpo and they were 56.3 and then 1 week later at 16 dpo they were 1241, which is certainly high for that early on but I do know that hcg can very greatly in pregnancies.  I guess I will keep wondering until I know for sure.  Thank you for your insight.

I am an ultrasound technician, specializing in OB/Gyn at a major woman's hospital and even I cannot tell from that image.  The gains are not set well and the image is poor.  Yes, it is POSSIBLE there are two embryos.....but it could be just the fetal pole and a yolk sac.  If there are two embryos in one sac, the twins would be monochorionic, meaning they would share one placenta and would be at risk for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrom.  Hopefully, if there are two, they at least each have their own AMNIOTIC sac and are not monoamniotic, which are also at risk for cord entanglement.  I suggest showing the image to your doctor and asking if a formal ultrasound examination is in order.

Thanks so much for all your help, I really appreciate you asking the doctor.  If you would like to email the attached picture, you can.  My email address is ***@****
that is a lower case "L" and then the number "3"  sometimes it confuses people.  But thank you.

I'm copying below the exact e-mail from the doctor.  Please don't be offended but the wording that she uses, she knows me well and has always been a jokester...  The picture that she adjusted looks a lot better than your picture, she has the equipment at work to clean photos up and make them look clearer (I wish I knew how to attach it to this e-mail).

Here is the doctors response:

Your mom sent me the picture, and at first I thought she might be right, but there was so much gain that it made everything white.  I adjusted the picture a little (see attached), and I think the little white critter just above the word baby is exactly that, and the area to the right of it looks like the yolk sac,  with its thick white walls surrounding around a black space.

But without seeing the entire scan, it's hard to say that there's NOT another baby in there.  Stranger things have happened!

I'm getting ready to get off and the doctor is looking at your ultrasound now.  If I hear something I will send you a message later this evening.  I have to take Gavin to swimming lessons when I get home so it might not be until later tonight.  If I don't hear anything, I will def have an answer for you in the am.

It does look like two, you should google some pics. I think usually there are two sacs, though and you have only one, and so I just don't know.
