Bad nt scan

I had an Nt scan which was 3.0. The doctor said I have a 1 in 60 chance for DS. Has anyone had this high and it turned out ok?

Thanks for updating us.  Please let us know how things turn out, and know I am wishing you well.  Glad you were able to come up with a solution that worked well for you.  I can honestly say I have never regretted my decision to have amnio.  Take care.

Thanks for all the helpful responses. I decided to have amnio and I am on day 7 waiting... I had it because of the screen (1 in 60)and the doctor said shorter long bones at the amnio (iwas just about 18 weeks)was the only thing she noticed. That with the 3.0 nt(at 13 weeks 4 days) was enough to make me concerned!

mom2b71 may need to make sure that an invasive test is what she wants, and to consider that as a last resort since there are other non invasive tests that can be done with good reliability of results although not certainly as you mentioned.

As far as I know it's closer to 2-3 in 100 for CVS since CVS isn't something thats been done as long as amnios which range to 1-2 in 100. with CVS there is also the chance that the sample they get will have to be retaken due to failure of the cells to grow and sometimes not taking a big enough sample.

Your measurement of 8.4 is very high  so   I understand why you requested the CVS. also, an NT measurement isnt reliable unless done between 11-13 weeks. there are alot of false positives because doctors do it just at the 11 week mark or at the 13 week mark or later.

and your very right that if she wants to know for sure and if it will make a difference, especially if it'll affect her choice to terminate or not. (also referred to as "pregnancy management")

I would thouroughly recommend a CVS or ultrasound depending on how far along you are and if you really want to know for sure.
I had a CVS and the procedure itself was only a little uncomfortable - the local anaesthetic was the worst part. I had general light cramping and soreness for two days. Very bearable - it seems most don't even have that. For me it was such a small risk to take and worth the peace of mind.
My NT measurement was 8.4mm and it came back clear. For me though with such a high reading we still don't really know for sure though if there is a genetic problem but at least the major chromasomal conditions were ruled out.  We are lucky to have this technology available to us and whilst each to their own for me it was worth the risk. 1 in 100 I believe for miscarriage from a cvs and 2 in 100 from an amnio.
You have to ask yourself I think if you really want to know and if it is really going to make any difference for you.

Best of luck!

Martikdragon gave you great advice.  I agree, 3.0 is borderline.  I wanted to add that at my NT scan/bloodwork my risk level for DS came back 1:13.  I did opt for amnio to know for absolute certain and my son was typical.  He is now a healthy happy 7 month old.  He was born when I was 40.

You have many options to choose from.  For me, I was not going to terminate, but I did need to know for certain so I chose amnio and would do it again.  I am not advocating it as it is not without it's risks, but once I talked to my OB and did some research on my own, I felt comfortable with it.

It's important to understand that tests like the NT scan and first trimester screen are not diagnostic...they simply determine risk factor and help you and your Dr. decide if further testing is warranted.  It's not uncommon for people to have test results like yours and have everything turn out fine.

Good luck, and congrats on your pregnancy.

mom2b71~ 3.0 is OK, doctors all have different opinions and standards depending on their schooling and when they had it.

3.0 is borderline but sound ok. you can get a level 2 u/s done in a few weeks to check for "soft markers" which would be discrepancies in the leg and arm length compared to the belly, and  certain differences in the head and belly measurements.

%60 or so of babies do have a heart issue but much of the time it heals on it's own or with some medication.  the heart problems can be detected via ultrasound as early as 16 weeks.

my first son has down syndrome. I was having an amnio for another reason (hereditary skin disorder I can pass on  that affects the birth plan) I don't know his NT or my blood test results and was shocked because we were 21 when we had him (23 now, married 5yrs :)  )

we wouldn't change him for anything, fyi. it's understandable to be worried so make a list of any and all questions you have for your doctor, keep it handy to add to it as you think of newer questions and go over them at your next appointment. don't leave until your satisfied with the answers, and understand them. :) some dr's can use terminology which is confusing.
