Seeking Advice! Regarding Several Miscarriages...

Hello all my medhelp friends. I know it has been awhile since I have posted to the site. I needed time to heal, and get myself together behind this last m/c.  (2 babies, 4 m/c back to back, 1 ectopic 2005)

My doctor ordered several test trying to see if he could determine what was causing these back to back m/cs. Every test he ordered came back normal. He then encouraged me to wait two cycles and try again.  However, many of you know after each m/c I did wait two cycles before I tried again. Each time I did conceive, but never seem to go pass 7 wks. I am now taking Folic Acid, and Prenatal Vitamins. I am 38, and know that my age could be a factor. I also believe that the one tube could be a factor as well. I am a little scare to try again, I have no doubt that I can get pregnant my fear is why want the baby hold? Is there any advice that any of you ladies can give me regarding the reasons these miscarriages may be occurring? Should I be doing more to build my body up? Thanks

Love Yolanda

Hi Yolanda,
I really understand your pain, as I just had my 4th pregnancy loss this past week:(  I am older than you, though, and I sincerely believe that you should still have hope!  I know many women your age who have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies, and there is HOPE that it is not too late for you!

But PLEASE see about visiting a Reproductive Endocrinologist at a fertility clinic.  It is not a fun experience, but she/he will be able to run a battery of tests on you that a normal GP or OB/GYN is unable or unwilling to do.  With back to back losses, I do believe that something else besides "bad eggs" and "bad luck" is going on. It could be chromosal, immunological, anatomical abnormality, PCOS, endo, short LP...any number of reasons can be ruled out by an RE.  Please talk to your regular Doctor about getting an appointment with a specialist.

I sincerely wish you all the best,
M.

Yolanda, don't give up! I am sure one day you will have a sticky one. I am now 16w1d pregnant after 2 m/cs in a row. After my last m/c my ob/gyn prescribed me with baby aspirin, folic acid and iron supplement. She said many women here who had m/cs had succesfully have a baby after taking baby aspirin. Try it Hon. It really works for me this time and I am 37 years old and will be 38 when I deliver this baby.

Thanks so much Amanda... I do believe it can happen for me, it's just one of those things when you are constantly going through m/cs.  Each time you are thinking this one will stick.  I will take all the good advice you all are giving, and wait on my season. I will take the low dose baby asprin, as well as get the fish oil. Can I take the iron supplement that the doctor gave me when I was pregn, are they the same?

Again, thanks to all

Honey, I feel your pain.  You know my story, you and I have had such similar experiences with this.  I also had a whole whack of testing after miscarriages 2, 3 and 4.  Everything also came back normal.  I too was working with an OB as here in my city it can take a year to get in to see an RE.  I didn't really change anything from the last 5 pregnancies to this one.  Just the normal stuff, cut back on caffeine, watched my diet, no drinking or anything, etc.  The only thing I added was the omega fish oil with my 5th loss and continued it on, still taking it now.  I have taken low dose (baby asprin) since pregnancy no. 2 or 3.  Also, taking iron supplement, calcium, prenantal and took prometrium the whole first trimester.

I really believe that a loss in first trimester is almost a pre determined situation at moment of conception. It is almost always due to something not developing properly or a chromosonal abnormality.  It is very unlikely it is due to anything you did or didn't do. I remember well how frustrated I was not getting any real answers with my tests.  Even chromosonal testing on the tissue after D&C didn't show up anything at all.   I know several women on these boards who have had experiences like ours (prevatt is another that springs to mind, she had 4 losses in a row), then had a perfectly healthy baby.  It is tougher to get a healthy egg when we are older, but I did and I beleive you can too.  If all the tests are showing normal, try again (if that's what you want to do).  I know it's scary, but you can bet I am so glad I did.  I didn't even wait 2 cycles.  In fact, this time around I was pregnant immediately following a miscarriage (mind you it was a very early one this time).  I didn't even have AF in between.  At 20 weeks now my little boy is perfect according to all the scans (I even did amnio).  If I can do it (and others can), you can too.  I know how hard this is, but all you can do is try again.   Hugs sweet friend and you know I am here for you if you need to talk.  Love you girlfriend.  Amanda

thanks for responding...hands down .absolutely need to go to a RE (reproductive endocrinologist)...ESPECIALLY with you history and age...so many people waste their time going to the obgyn because they are comfortable and hopeful...alot of times its not easy to get in right away...i would suggest calling and setting up an appointment. look at this way...would you go to your primary doctor if you kept having heart attacks? you would go to the specialist (cardiologist)...this isnt any different. i can guarentee alot more light will be shed on why your body is responding this way after testing...wishing you the best  of luck!! please keep us posted!!!

Hello Yolanda, I'm so sorry to hear about all the miscarriages, I know that being our age can be challenging to figure out what might be causing these things to happen.  You know, I'm no doctor but this is what makes sense to me. Look at it like just a process of elimination.  Start off with your diet, then you can rule this out and go to the next  item on your list.  If you are doing everything you can in regards to your nutrition (which is one of the most important  things and should be on top of your list) to bring it up to par then your more than half way there!  I'm not talking about just taking your prenatals and getting in a workout daily. You have to eat like you are already pregnant.  You have to start by eating a whole foods lifestyle and taking other supplements that might enhance your fertility.  One of the things I'm taking is Maca Root Powder.  If you go  online and Google (Maca Root and fertility ) there you will find a wealth of information on this Peruvian root that is nothing short of miraculous. I love it and put it in smoothies sometimes when I'm not in the mood for one I encapsulate it in veg. gel caps. and down it that way.  I can go on forever about this stuff but I really stress to look it up, you'll be glad you did!  I don't know if it will help you to stop your miscarriages, but I know it could never hurt and your overall health will surely benefit! Let us know how it works out!       Alba C.

No, I hadn't tried that. I know after each d&c the doctor put me on baby asprin.  Thanks for the advice.

Have you tried taking low dose or baby asprin. I've been told that when we get older, it helps the lining of the uterus so that it is more fetus friendly so to speak. I'm sure there are lots of other things but that is the one major thing that comes to my mind. Best of luck to you.
