1% chance of living?

One of my friends is 13 weeks pregnant. She went in for a routine ultrasound where the doctor said the baby has a cyst on its spine and has a 1% chance of living. This to me sees really unlikely. I know that in a lot of instances cysts are seen in early ultrasounds and then they resolve on their own. My friend is heartbroken and I don't want to give her false hope. Has anyone had this happen and what was the outcome?

Just curious...what did your friend decide to do?

Sounds typical. She should definitely get a second opinion.

I told her to seek a second opinion. They are pushing her to terminate the pregnancy.

From what I just read about it, cysts on the spine are uncommon while pregnant and are very serious. I'm not sure about a 1% survival rate, but the ones I read about (that it mentioned) are meningomyelocele which is fetal spina bifida or Sacrococcygeal teratoma. Both of these are much more common in females versus males. She definitely needs to talk to her doctor about these.
