Truth about Dialation and effacement ?

I found on one site that sharp pains down real low (cervix) can mean your cervix is thinning and/or dialating. On another site I read that dialation and effacement is undetectable unless you are checked or check yourself. What is true ?

Sorry! No, I didnt have a clue I dilated, but I heard every contraction helps dilate you so I had hope. Either way it may just depend on how in tune you are with your own body. Good luck momma :) youre getting close

No. I had no clue I was dilated. I lost my plug at 35+4 and my cervix was only 50%  and contractions 15min aoart. II had an appointment a week later and no progress at all. At my last appointment I got checked at my cervix was fully ripened,  2cm dilated but contractions are at 9min. I had noooo idea lol. But screw 6wks of continously growing in pain contractions!

@doulamommy .. I have heard a lot about how the regular checking is unnecessary and just gives potential for introducing infection into the cervix ..

Of course @LillyM321! Anything to help a fellow mommy. I hope it helps. I'm planning on not getting checked at all this time I'd I can manage it, and if I decide to then I want it on my terms, not just when the nurse thinks I should.

It can mean anything. One girl in another group dilated to 3cm when she was 36wks and was 75% effaced and stayed that way til they induced her at 41+wks.

Good to know... I knew about it being fine a few weeks before labor and very typical I just thought 33 weeks was a little early. Do you think it means (if I am dialatingt this soon) I won't be overdue though ?

Lol if u were dilating @33wks doesnt mean u would go into labor early.  I was 2cm for 2 wks then 3 cm for 1 wk with my first. I started finding at 35wks.

And while looking into that is when I read about how the cervix getting ready can cause those weird pains

The other night I felt the weirdest thing ever... (I'm a first time mom). It seriously felt like my baby was trying to claw his way out of my cervix for a second ! Not sure if it was a foot or what just felt like... scraped across my cervix. It made me cringe a little. I was like... no don't try to come out yet lol

Okay! I was researching what this sharp twinging pain is and read it could be my cervix thinning and then when I looked into that it said it's undetectable and unnoticable and mommikat, I wouldn't dare try to check myself! Lol anyways I'm 33 weeks and was just concerned I was already starting to dialate and thin.

Both statements are true. Just because you have sharp pains doesn't always mean you're dilating. & yes, you won't know unless you've been checked by your ob. I would never advise checking yourself could lead to infectoon if u could possibly reach it on your own. But, with me... when I started having braxton hicks they were minutes apart and strong & I always was checked after telling my doc I had those,  & I always was dilated. So once I hit 34wks & up & I start bh I just know I'm dilating.

There are other ways to guesstimate dilation but the cervix check is the most accurate and well known. I will try to look up the other ways and share them with you!

The second is true. You cannot feel yourself dilating. If you could doctors would tell you what to look out for and wouldnt bother with checks.
