Unassisted birth of Jayden Alexander

I had my first little girl in a hospital with all the medical interventions, epidural, pain meds, pitocin, etc.  It was a long labor of 30 hours and by the time she was born I was exhausted and doped up because my epidural did not take on one side. As soon as I got pregnant with my second baby I decided I wanted to have my baby at home but were I live midwives are not legal so I decided on an unassisted birth. I researched every thing on UC and got my supplies for delivering at home, Me and my husband took Bradley method classes to prepare.I read birth stories and watched tons of unassisted homebirth videos. My family thought I had lost my mind but I know that women have been giving birth without doctors for thousands of years and I knew I could too.

Here is my birth story........... On October 22, I was 39 weeks and 2 days, I was having contractions during the day but they were not regular. That night around 9pm I lost my mucus plug. I went to bed around 10. At 3 am contractions woke me up, I tried to go back to sleep but they were coming 10 minutes apart. I thought to myself that it was probably going to be awhile before they got closer. Around 4 I could not lay in bed any longer and decided to get up. My contraction started coming every 5 minutes and were getting stronger. At 5:30am I woke up my husband because I could not get through the contractions on my own. At that point my contractions were 3-2 minutes apart and were starting to make me doubt that I could do it naturally. I tried laying in the side lying position that Bradley method recommends but that did not last long because I could not lay still and relax. I got up and my contraction started coming on top of one another. Around 7am me and my husband got into the tub and I worked through my contractions. I was pretty vocal making a oooohhh sound. I was starting to lose control and I told my husband that I could not do it any longer. He told me he wanted to get out and check my cervix to see if he could tell how dilated I was. I decided to get out and let him try because I could go much longer if he could still feel lots of cervix left. Getting out of the tub was a very bad idea. I told him over and over that I could not do it. He managed to check my cervix and he said that he thought I was about 5-6 centimeters. At that point all I could think was WTF!! LOL It was about 8 am at that point and I had to get back in the tub. My little girl had woken up and she came into the bathroom to watch. I finally found my zone and leaned back on my husband in the tub and labored quietly for about an hour or so. At 9 am my husband got out of the tub to get my DD something to eat. I got through one or two contractions before I called him to get back in the tub because I needed to lean back on him. Once he got back in I felt my water break, every contraction after that I could feel my cervix pulling over the baby's head. I started having SUPER strong contractions and I was involuntarily pushing a little.DH called my DD in the bathroom because she wanted to watch her brother be born. I told my husband to move so he could check my cervix again because I was pushing a little and I did not know if I should be pushing. Well as soon as he moved in front of me I started pushing full force and I could not control it. I could feel baby boys head coming out, when they talk about the ring of fire they ARE NOT KIDDING!!! In three pushes he was born into his daddy's hands at 10am. Dh put him on my chest immediately and he started to cry. He is perfect!!!  I nursed him right away and he latched like he had been doing it forever!! I delivered the placenta about 10 minutes after he was born. 20 minutes later DH helped DD cut her baby brothers cord, which she thought was the coolest thing. She told me she was so proud that I had pushed "tookie" out (that is the nickname she gave him) :) I wrapped up baby boy and held him for awhile before I told Dh to get a mirror because I thought I tore a little. I did have a small tear and decided to go to the hospital to get stitched up. Once we got there they checked baby boy out and he was fine. I had to have 2 little stitches but other than that I was fine. He is nursing like a champ and is gaining weight. I feel so empowered to have had him at home the way I wanted. I am amazed at my body and myself. I feel so blessed and happy with my family. And his daddy feels like super man for delivering his own child. I would encourage anyone wanting a natural birth to think about UC because it was an AWESOME experience. If I ever have another child I would totally do it unassisted again.
