Caffeine and chocolate

Hi ladies,  as some of you know, I had a mc in December and my husband and I finally got our bfp recently (I'm only like 4 or 5 weeks...LMP 7/14/08)  ANYWAYS, I have given up caffeine in the form of coffee and any soda that I might have occasionally had BUT we had birthday cake on Sunday and my mom sent me home with a huge piece...I love chocolate and cake lol  THEN my grandmother made some comment about how I shouldn't eat the cake because it has a lot of caffeine in it.  I know chocolate has caffeine, and the piece I had on Sunday to take home was cut into four seven inch in length by 3 inches wide pieces (it was a tall layered cake with peanut butter in between the three layers!).  I had one piece yesterday and another today then my grandmother freaked me out!  I know I shouldn't eat cake while pregnant...no nutrients, unhealthy etc. etc.  BUT do you really think it has a lot of caffeine and that I could have hurt my developing baby?

Thanks!
Heather

I agree.  I wouldn't stress. (easier said than done, right?  LOL!)   I read that they have actually increased the amount of caffeine pregnant women can safely have.  I believe it is equivalent to two cups a day.  SURELY the cake didn't have that much.  Of course it's important to do everything in moderation and it's always good to error on the side of caution...but I would bet your cake was OK.  :)

Ok this is when I'd tell my family to chill out.  Caffeinne is ONE thing but Chocolate?  I wouldn't be able to survive 40 weeks without chocolate!  When I was pregnant all I wanted to eat was chocolate and it tasted even better than it tastes when on PMS.
Anyway I read an article a few months back that CHOCOLATE has some anti-inflamatory agents that actually helps prevent miscarriages.  I'm going to find it, but don't binge on chocolate.

Chocolate found to reduce risk of miscarriage

(NaturalNews) If you're pregnant, you may be happy to know that chocolate cravings may be good for you. New research shows morning sickness lowers the risk of miscarriage by almost 70 percent -- and eating chocolate daily also appears to lower the risk of miscarriage.

"Chocolate is a genuine healing food," said Mike Adams, a consumer health advocate and holistic nutritionist. "It helps prevent cancer, boosts liver function and improves moods and energy. The key, though, is getting real cacao, not the candied chocolate that's mostly sugar and milk fat. When shopping for a chocolate bar, look for a cacao content of 75 percent or higher, and always buy organic chocolate," Adams said.

Researchers from a new study said that chocolate also made pregnant women feel well enough to "fly or to have sex." When it came to morning sickness, the researchers said that the worse the nausea, the better.
In addition, the study revealed that there was no evidence that working full time had a worse effect on the risk of miscarriage than part-time work or staying at home -- even if the job involved standing for more than six hours day or heavy lifting. Women who stated that their jobs were stressful or demanding were significantly more likely to miscarry in the first three months of pregnancy, however.

The study also concluded that women were more likely to miscarry if the baby's father was older than 45, and women who were underweight when they conceived were 72 percent more likely to miscarry in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

The lead author of the study -- Noreen Maconochie -- said "It can be a very distressing experience for women, and any advice on how they can improve their chances of achieving a full-term pregnancy is likely to be welcome." Maconochie then added that, the causes for the majority of miscarriages ''are not wholly understood'' -- and many suspected risk factors remain controversial or unproven.

My doc said that 2 cups of caffeine a day is good (whatever form you choose to drink it).  Honestly, some days I probably drink 2-3 cups of either coffee or soda, but others I don't have any caffeine.  I have also started getting increased headaches which I think is from caffeine w/drawl (Tylenol does not help).  So don't freak out, I would worry too about certain foods I would eat but then I think about all the women who have smoked and drank while pregnant and their babies turned out fine.  My point is not to do that, LOL, but to just monitor everything.  Its funny, my mom sent me this email saying how "back in the day" women wouldn't get any testing, drink caffeine, do this do that and the babies turned out fine (I can't remember everything but it just went to show how much things are blown out of proportion these days).  You are going to hear SOOOOO many things you should or shouldn't do from random people and you just have to listen to your doctor.

Chocolate is fine to eat! There are actually some good nutrients in chocolate and nutritionists actually recommend you eating a little bit of it each day. Plus the amount of caffeine in chocolate is minimal, especially compared to a cup of coffee. Most cakes are made with powdered chocolate (chocolate cocoa) which contains even LESS chocolate than a chocolate bar. So you're fine!! I have a piece of cake or cookie every now and then. There is caffeine in chocolate for sure, but its not a lot to worry about. So enjoy!

Thanks to all the new posters and I really enjoyed the article Mumita posted!  Now I have no guilt...I might even have a few bites after dinner...it might be good for the baby lol.  It is sooo funny that she freaked because I never eat cake...like once a year tops...usually my mom's bday!  I don't get one for me or dh because he doesn't like sweets and if we have cake in the house I'll eat it and eat it!

Caffeine can cause you to have a misscarriage that's why she is freaking out on you. You should avoid caffeine in the first trimister at least.
