Driving 2 1/2 hours to give birth?

So I am planning a VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section). Problem is a lot of docs won't do it because they're afraid of liability-- even though inducing a woman with Pitocin has the same rate of uterine rupture as an unmedicated vbac. There are some clinics in Des Moines who allow vbacs, but only 1 or 2 doctors from each clinic are supportive out of usually 5 to 6 doctors. The last thing I want to worry about when pregnant is "Oh, no! What doc is on call when I go into labor!?" Therefore we are planning to go to U of I hospital midwives who are very supportive and openly encourage vbacs. They also give you more freedom to move, eat, etc. during labor...but they are 2 1/2 hrs away in Iowa City.

Anyone drive this far to give birth? Any experiences to offer? TIA.

I would have to drive two hours to Los Angeles for a VBAC, but I've opted to get a c-section. Besides the long drive I would be too nervous about getting stuck in traffic, not something to worry so much about in Iowa! That being said, I'm originally from Iowa and the U of I would be an amazing place to give birth! I'd make the drive if I were in your shoes.

I know a couple of ladies from my local Iowa ICAN group who have. I highly recommend going to ican-online. com and you can find your local chapter on there. It has a lot of great resources for vbac moms.

Thanks ladies! I feel better about it, I just needed another opinion besides my husband (who will support me in almost anything, even if it isn't rational, lol).

@ jaime4321- I don't know if you are from Iowa, but the University of Iowa gladly accepts VBA2C and I know some midwives do too depending on the reasons for your c-sections. Don't give up hope, it's still possible to have a vaginal birth!!! I recommend joining the ICAN group in your area.

I don't have to, but I totally would. I told my husband when we were checking out OBs that if they won't do VBAC, I'd go elsewhere. Luckily, we found a practice about 25 miles away where all the OBs will at least try for them.
