First Pregnancy & Being Induced

I am currently 34 weeks pregnant and been having gallbladder issues throughout my pregnancy. My gallbladder is full of stones and ive been in alot of pain so my doctor wants to induce me at around 36-37 weeks. Ive been reading alot about induced labour and so far my understanding is its very painful and dragged out. I am really scared of being induce so was wondering if you ladies could tell me your stories of labour & delivery if you were induced.
Thanks!

Induction isn't always more painful and drawn out.  I was induced with my last one.  Most doctors would NOT have induced me becuase I was having a vaginal birth after a c-section but becuase I had 3 previous vaginal births my doc thought it would be fine.  I got to the hospital and settled in and they got the pitocin started around 2 pm.  My son was born at 8:28 that evening.  The contractions were no more painful with my induction than they were with my other births, one of which I did with no pain meds at all.

It really just depends on the person.  There is no way of knowing how YOUR body is going to handle labor and delivery with or without induction.  It also has a lot to do with your genetics as well. Women who come from families that have long hard labors are more likely to have the same kind, whereas women who come from families who typically have less "eventful" labors will usually follow the same pattern. Of course that's not set in stone, but it does tend to follow a genetic path.

Its probably very painful but I wouldn't get induced that early.  The less ready your body is for labor the more likely you are to get a c-section.  If you aren't already in a favorable position to go into labor on your own it might not work at all.

Before agreeing to an induction you should really read all of the possible risks.  Some are here:  http://pregnancy.about.com/od/induction/a/risksinduction.htm

There's the huge risk of it just not working.  Even if you're overdue you only have a 50-50 shot of successful induction if your body isn't already on its way to spontaneous labor.  An unsuccessful induction with broken membranes (another induction technique) means an automatic cesarean section.

Another risk is uterine rupture.  Most women only associate this as a post-cesarean risk but another STRONG risk factor is induction of labor.  (See study below)

First i wish you the best of luck with any actions that are taken. With my first child i was in a car accident at 39 weeks 5 days. I was taken to the hospital and after 3 hours of monitoring they told me id be admitted untill i have the baby or i could be induced. Which i chose to be induced because i was so close and tired. Im not sure how much petosin i was given but i remember them telling me it was a small dose because i was already 2cm. When the contractions came in full force omg they hurt so frickin bad i was crying. Now keep in mind i was only 16 at the time so i was a big baby about it. I did get the epidural at 6cm but i continued to have the same amount of pain on my left side. (I had 3 doses of the epidural) From the start of the petosin to holding my baby was 8 hours and i was pushing for 45 minutes. Just like andreasmom i also ripped from front to back and had a lot of stitches. I wish you the best of luck though.

i didnt have gall bladder stones but my water broke and labor never started with my 6 year old son...he was my first delivery so i have nothing to comapre it to....i was induced at 10am and i went from no contraction straight to 5 min apart....they gradually increase in intensity....the docs gave me pain meds to help with the pain and then i got an epidural...my son was born at 807 that night and although there was a lot of pain it all faded to nothing as soon as he was born

I also had gallbladder stones during my pregnancy.  Thankfully I held up until I was 38 weeks and went into labor.  But I was taking to long to dilate so they induced me (they gave me petosin).  All I can tell you is to keep an eye out for how much petosin they give you (sometimes nurses want to rush things to much and be done).  With me, they gave me way too much (they kept increasing the doses every 30 min!..it was crazy!) and i'm sorry but it was very painful (even with the epidural) and instead of crowning the baby shoot out and ripped me up pretty bad down there.  (hopefully I have a good ob and she fixed me up as new).  But after that my daughter was in the NICU for 10 days with breathing problems which are attributed to the large dosis of petosin.  I'm not trying to scare just keep a watchful out to how much are they giving you.  I'm sure that everything will be fine with you and your baby.  Ussually being induced is not harmful and many women go through it just fine.  Just don't wait to long to ask for the epidural!..lol...Good luck and Congrats!
