Bishop score?

Have any of you heard of this? I've heard/read a ton of birth stories lately that start in induction for one reason or another, and the ones that make me sad are the ones that end up in c section for "failure to progress" when baby probably want ready anyway (hence why you had to be induced!).
But in my reading I came across the term bishop score, so if any of you are talking induction with your doc/midwife, ask for what your bishop score is first. For a first time mom, you'll probably have a successful induction with a sore of eight or more, second time mom might be able to have a successful induction with a score as low as six.
It gives you points on a scale of 0-2 (like the apgar your baby will be given after birth) in the following categories:
cervical texture (how soft or rigid it is)
cervical placement
cervical effacement
cervical dilation
baby's station

Hopefully this will give you a better idea of whether or not you'll have a successful induction!

@babyberry000
unless it's medically necessary you have every right to refuse induction. They can't force you to be induced against your will. Talk to your doc/midwife and figure out under which circumstances he/she would be inclined to induce so you have a better idea of what to expect.

Depends on your doc/midwife but it was something that was never brought up by my midwife who I love dearly and trust a ton. But I was a very good candidate for induction, had my baby within ten hours after getting my pitocen started (and even when they turned my pit drip off I continued contracting perfectly!)

I've never heard about this! I'm glad you posted this. Do doctors usually notify what your bishop score is or do you have to ask?? I'm guessing I was in the same boat as you with my first. Closest thing I'm getting to induction is a membrane sweep which I've already had to try and stimulate my dilation a bit better to try and avoid the induction and potential of c section. It turned out just as I had hoped. Dilated me to a 2 1/2 and no baby. I'm willing to wait until she's ready

That's always the best if it's possible! Just trying to inform so we hopefully have fewer c sections resulting from unsuccessful inductions.

@Allocate I'd only bring it up if your doctor/midwife suggests induction or if you want to electively induce for some reason.

I think part of it for her waa she wasu family doctor and we have too close of a relationship so I think ahe thought she was helping bc I was miserable when really all ahe did was screw up my labor plan :-( I still love her as a family doctor and the doctor of my children but ill always be mad about that :-( I have an ob this pregnancy bc I told her I will not do a repeat cesarean. So I found a good doctor for vbac :-) hope things go my way and doesntc end in csection again. She said she absolutely will not induce me bc it's increases risk of rupture and that I can carry till 41 weeks before shell schedule a cesarean :-) I am happy with this. Otherwise I get my vbac providing labor goes well I plan on no medicine just waking shower and birthing ball. Like I wanted first time :-) im determined! :-)

When should I talk to my doctor about this?

Ugh you'd think a doc would know better than to induce with a bad score! I don't know what my score was when I was induced (my water had broken with no contractions) but thinking back on what I know now I'd guess that I wasa seven or an eight.

Yup my doctor have me my bishop score and still induced me even though it was too low so I wasn't a good candidate I was cax day before my due date and I stored dilating at 8cm and ended up with a csection. I have a new doctor now and I'm planning an all natural vbac :-) still very sour about how first labor and birth went if I'd known better at the time I would've fought it :-(
