Low progesterone levels at 5 wks 4 days

I am 5 wks 4 days pg with my first!  I am so very excited but also extremely anxious that something is going to go wrong.  I have PCOS and a history of very long, irregular cycles, so this is indeed a blessing.  I had some spotting last week (one just one morning, brown in color) so I went off for tests.  My hCG levels were 1039 and my progesterone was 12.  Then I had more bloods 48 hours later; hCG had gone up to 2239 and progesterone was down to just above 10!!  My last bloods were taken yesterday (48 hours after previous ones) and my hCG was 4450 (just below double; ok i think) and my progesterone was up to 15.  Generally, my progesterone seems very low to me. but whenever I braoch the subject of supplements or suppositories, I get cut off by my health provider who keeps saying the progesterone level is not that important!  So, firstly, are my prog. levels too low?  And secondly, what can i do about them if i am unable to get a prescription from my doctor?

I would rec asking for progesterone meds. My sister had low progesterone levels in both of her pregnancies and her Dr refused to give her anything and as a result both of her kids have lax ligaments in their legs which the pediatrician and physio have attributed to low progesterone levels in her pregnancies. Her daughters are both had physio twice a week, had to wear special shoes, didn't crawl, or attempt to stand till they were almost 18 months old =, and that was only after intensive physio. My niece couldn't brace herslef to stand and screamed bloody murder whenever she was made to put pressure of weight on her legs. I would strongly advise you do what's necessary to get ur levels raised. Keeps us updated? x

My OB is good with anything over 10, preferring over 15. She said that the additional progesterone can also just add unnecessary side effects.  Regarding miscarriage, she said exactly what Julii did above.

I do agree with nickie, if you feel concerned you need to discuss it with your doctor.  As you can see, it can go either way.

My doctor said anything above 10 is just fine.  Suppositories won't help you.  If you are going to miscarry, it's going to happen whether you're on progesterone or not.  More than anything, progesterone aids in the luteal phase.  Now that you're already pregnant though, it's not really necessary.  And your progesterone is over 10, so you're fine.

My numbers where the same and I had some slight bleeding and come to find out that my progesterone was low. My fertility doctor was very concerned and but me on suppositories and after 10 weeks I stopped them and haven't had any reoccuring problems... I think that if you feel like you need them then you should insist on something to boost it!

I went for my first appt at 5 wks 4 days, my doc did bloodwork.  My HCG was 8,526 and my progesterone was 12.7.  My doc did not do repeat bloodwork, I am now almost 16 weeks along and everything is fine. With my last pregnancy I had my first blood draw at almost 7 weeks exactly My HCG was 61219 and my Progesterone was 12.5.  I didn't have any supplements for that pregnancy and he is now a happy healthy 19 month old.

It is important! my doctor is the same way, i got him to prescribe to me anyway. spotting is a sign of low progesterone. You can get natural progesterone cream at the health food store, that is what i was going to do if he said no. It is a good sign that it went up to 15, but ideally it should be over 20. Ask your doctor.
