Removal of ovary while 9week pregnant (open surgery)

I just had an operation where the doctors had to remove one of my ovaries. I was 9 wk & 2 day preg when I was operated upon. I had ovarian cysts & the ovary size increased a lot due to this. It got twisted in its place which in turn twisting the blood supply vessel & with that interrupting the blood supply to the ovary & the tissues started dying.
I was under tremendous pain when I reached the hospital. As per the doctors they had to remove this ovary as otherwise this might have lead to gangrene due to the dead tissues present in the body which could have been life threatening.
I was given local anesthesia & an open surgery was performed as the leproscopic surgery was not possible as per the doctors. I have 5 stitches (doctors say - I have not seen still and neither have my husband). The surgery was performed only 4 days ago.
Initially the doctors said that in all possibility I was going to lose my baby due to the stress the surgery causes on the fetus and the initial 48 hours were critical. Now 96 hrs past that dead line, we are both (baby & myself) holding on. Today doctor confirmed the good news after a fresh USG.
AS per the doctor I still carry a risk of losing the pregnancy till about another 2 weeks and they are keeping me on a regular dose of "Progestrone", a hormone shot, ever 24 hrs.
I wish to ask if anybody is aware of this type of scenario & its complications.
How good or bad this shot of Progestrone is.
Does this cause any short or long term harm to the baby or the mother.
Does this actually help in retaining pregnancy.

I just had this happen to me two weeks ago!  I'm 8 weeks along now.  My doctor prescribed a vaginal progesterone, and I was hesitant especially after everything that had already been in my body from the surgery (it was an emergency situation and they started doing laprascopy and then realized they had to do open surgery because the cyst was too big).  However, he had really done his research and talked to high risk pregnancy centers and he literally saved my life so I trusted him after verbalizing my fears.  Since then I've heard only great things about progesterone and how helpful it's been to women in saving their pregnancies.  The risks in this situation are so tiny that it's worth it, but what I have heard is that the deliver method really makes a difference.  From what I've learned the vaginal cream is the best way to go.

Good luck with everything!  This is pregnancy number 5 for us and I've been on the progesterone for 2 weeks and feel just like i have in my other pregnancies (which is sick, so that's no fun, but it's always a comfort to me because I know baby is fine!)

Progesterone is being given to you for a very, very good reason. If the cyst that got twisted was the one giving off progesterone naturally in your body and you had it removed it could cause you to miscarry. Progesterone is necessary in the first trimester to tell your brain to not menstruate because you are pregnant. You only take supplements during the first trimester because when the placenta forms it takes over the production of progesterone so the supplements are then no longer necessary.

I took progesterone my previous pregnancy and this pregnancy. Many women take it with a history of miscarriage. Due to your unique circumstance of having an ovary removed this was a good call by the doctor.

I have never heard of this but I know the progestrone helps alot in retaining a pregnancy especially in the early weeks. I'm sure your doctor wouldnt give it to you if it wasnt safe. And your body makes this hormone naturally. They also give this to women in the early weeks to keep them from miscarrying  when they keep having miscarriages. Best of luck to you.
