Possibility that doctors were wrong about miscarriage?

I posted a question earlier, but only got one reply. I'm hoping if I explain a little better I'll get more results.

On the 15th of October I went to the ER for abdominal pain. They ended up doing a blood pregnancy test (positive). My hCG levels were around 700. (I don't know exact numbers because I had just come out of an epileptic seizure). The doctor was worried about ectopic pregnancy, so he ordered me to come back within 48 hours to recheck my levels.

On the 17th of October, I went back and the second doctor checked my levels and said that they were at 180. He ordered an ultrasound and the technologist didn't see any sign of a baby, but the first doctor from the 15th said I was only about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks in. But the second doctor was saying I would have been 4 to 5 weeks because my LMP was September 15th. And he told me that I miscarried because of the drop in my level, but also told me to go to my OB on the 25th to get my levels rechecked again to see if they have risen at all. Ectopic was ruled out and i was diagnosed with a cyst on my left ovary (being the reason for my pains).

I have had absolutely no bleeding and I haven't passed any tissue at all.

Can someone please help me and try to explain what's going on?

It sounds to me like you aren't far enough along for them to detect.  I wouldn't do anything until you have another ultrasound or until you start bleeding.  If they are wrong and your dates are off, everything could be fine.  I know that numbers coming down isn't a good sign but they can fluctuate for no reason.  You could try taking a pregnancy test again but it would probably read positive no matter what.  Get them to do another u/s for sure if you are thinking about getting a d&c.  You don't want any questions that could cause you to wonder forever.  GOod luck and best wishes.

A drop in HCG level's are never a good thing. It usually mean's MC, and if that is the case I am terribly sorry for your loss. But if the dr's were off on your conception then it is quite possible your still pregnant and your hormone level's just haven't risen enough and they were off on their original 700.... If you haven't passed anything, it could be because you were so early in the pregnancy that the sac absorbed into the uterus and you will "shed" that when you have your next period. Are you having any symptoms of pregnancy at all ? If they did an ultrasound, the baby is too small at 2-3 weeks to be seen on monitor. The sac would have to be about 6 weeks and you would be able to see the fetal pole (heart beat)... I would wait and go to the Dr. on the 25th and see what they say. Good luck and please let me know how it turns out. My thoughts are with you... *HUGS*

I agree weird!! If your levels are dropped there is a chance you might have miscarried. I don't think he would have told you to go see your doc on the 25 from the 17th thats the weird part. I would make an appointment ASAP and get bac in to the doctors. Every woman is different but I had this happen and didnt pass anything either and I ended up having to have a laproscopy for my doctor to clean my uterus out. I would go see my doctor and express my concerns of waiting. Good Luck!!!

I went to the OB today, and he told me something that settled me. The hospital got my hCG wrong. The doctor the first night said that they were 766 and the doctor the second night said they were 180 and that they had dropped. BUT - I looked over the papers with the OB and he pointed out that my levels on the first night were 76.6 not 766. And the second they were 180.2 so they actually did double as they were supposed to, but the doctors made a mistake. They should have double checked their work because they were telling me I should be at least 5 and 1/2 weeks and I almost got a D&C because I was convinced. I'm glad I didn't, and now I have a healthy baby on the way (: HOPING FOR A BOY!

Thank you everyone for your support :D

oh my gosh...GOOD news!!  I'm so sorry you had to go through that worry in the interim but really glad that this turned out ok for you!!!  do you have an OB yet?  a high risk OB might be a good idea since you mentioned your seizure (I'm going to a high risk OB myself and it's nice because you get in to see them more often and you are treated by someone who has experience with like patients).

Have a healthy and happy 9 months!

Yes, I do have an OB and I also have a 1 year old daughter and she was monitored by a different doctor, but I owe him a little money and can't pay him off just yet.. which is fine because he's not very close to where I live. But yes, he will be giving me sonograms almost every time I go in to see him. And thanks guys, I don't think I could have ever gotten over that.

Thanks (: yes, I'm very happy I didn't have a miscarriage. Even though I am only eighteen and have one baby already, it is still a greatly difficult thing to go through, let alone process it. I couldn't handle it if I tried..
