Strech and Sweep of Membranes Advice/Experience?

i know theres probably a million of these questions posted but i'll ask anyways.

at my appointment my doctor said that he will probably sweep my membranes at my next appointment which will be this wednesday. i was just wondering what all you ladies thought and some of your experience with it.

at my appointment i was 1cm dilated. 50% effaced, cervix was soft. i had some strong contractions last night and could feel myself dilating more so maybe im at 2cm now or more effaced then before. do you think my chances are pretty good? i read theres only about a 25% chance it would work.

Yay! I am so glad that your doctor is so understanding and isn't going to make you go any longer than a day later than when you are due! I hope it is a smooth induction and delivery =)

I was 37 1/2 weeks and 3cm 90%effaced. She did it on friday. Lost mucus plug sat/sun and my water broke  tues 1:30 am and I delivered him at 8:15am. If your baby is ready to come it will work.

Hey, just thought id share my experience. i was seen by my midwife on my due date, she said cervix was soft, so should happen within a few days. She gave me a sweep too, just because i wanted him out asap and thought it was worth giving it a go. 2weeks later nothing.....i had to have my waters broken to go into labour. So for me....it didnt work! Good luck with the birth! xx

I've had three children and I am now pregnant with my 4th. I have had my membranes stripped with every pregnancy so far, and probably will with this one as I do not dialate quickly. It does work. I usually went into labor within 48 hours. I lost my mucus plug with my first child, and delivered within 48 hr. So, more then likely you are definately ready!

I've heard it hurts.... but it probably depends on the cervix itself. Good luck, keep us updated!

I had it done with my first son at 38 weeks and it didn't do anything. (I was 3 cm dilated and 75% effaced). Had a few cramps afterward, but that was it. The OB did it again at 39 weeks and I went into labor within two hours.

Not really sure if it was the sweep or just time for him to come out, but I had it done at 11:30am, labor began around 1:30pm, went to the hospital at 5:30pm and had him at 9:08pm.

I really think that for it to really work, just like all the other things out there to start labor, your body has to be ready anyway. :)

with my oldest son I had that done at 38 wks.  It was on a Thursday.  The following Monday I woke with a slow fluid leak,...L & D said it wasn't fluid it was urine and sent me home, but my contractions continued to becoming more intense and frequent, my OB told me to go back...so around 4:15-4:30 I arrived at the hospital, they confirmed it was my water and I was 3 cm.  My son was born at 6:20 pm...just about 2 hours after arriving.  I will say that depending on the doctor and the woman herself having it done ranges from uncomfortable to painful.

I got it done at the end of 37/beginning of 38wks and didn't go into labor until 40...and all I can say is OUCH. but I've heard of it working for some women so I hope it works for you! didn't do a thing for me besides hurt like a B!

well it sounds like the baby is getting ready to come.  This questions was asked by me 7 months ago lol.  When i had it done i was 2cm but my cervix was still hi and firm and i was about 37 weeks, then i had it done again at 39 weeks but no change, i just had my dr schedule me an induction.  But i have heard stories of women saying once they had the sweep, that night they started having strong contractions and ened up going into labor not long after, i guess every one is different and i guess it depends on how ready the baby is and how ready your cervix is.   Good luck and congrats
