Taking baby outside

my baby girl is 3 weeks old and I was wondering when is it safe to take her places?  She does go to the doctors, but I was told though one of our neighbors who is also a doctor that she is too young for her to go outside.  i did forget to ask him when it will be safe for her to go outside.  What are all your opinions?

I'm about ready to have baby number 4 and have always been told it is perfectly fine to bring them outside from the beggining. I would be careful about large crowds because of the germs, but it's good for babies to get some fresh air as long as it's not to cold which at this time of the year is unlikely! have you taken your baby to his/her pediatrician yet? and if you did, did the Dr say anything? I'v never had a pediatrician tell me not to take a baby outside and have even been told it is good for them, for the fresh air and vitamin D from the sun. they do burn easier so be careful, but good luck and enjoy the outside with your baby!

Especially at this time of year, fresh air and Vitamin D will do your baby good. It soothes babies to go out for a walk. I was scared in the beginning too and didn't want to go out but it is important.

My guys have been on the go since day one. We've never kept them in the house. We were out visiting people the day after they came home.

Yes, a sling is a great idea! I have a Moby Wrap and LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

I have never heard that you can't take your newborn out.

I did read that if you 'wear' your baby (like in a sling) that people are less likely to try and touch it. Just a thought.

Seriously? The guy sounds like a quack. Put baby in a stroller and use sun safety precautions... go on a nice walk and get some sunshine and fresh air! She'll be FINE, I promise! We took our 1-week-old to church. We just didn't let anyone touch her and she did fine.

I find that weird too. I would think use common sense. Don't bring her around places where there's going to be alot of germs. Limit the time in the sun but a little sun is good for them.

Yes, I know about keeping her safe, but it seemed weird to me that my nieghbor told us not to bring the baby outside unless she has a doctors apointment.  He's a peditrician.

I don't think it's a question of being "unsafe" (I've personally never heard of that before, although I have heard of different cultural beliefs that dictate that a baby shouldn't be out in public before they are 1 month of age).  I think it's more a question of common sense - for example, not exposing your daughter to long periods in direct sunlight when her skin could burn....things like that.
