Positive then Negative Pregnancy Test Results?

My wife and I have been TTC since last August when she went off of Tri-Cyclen-Lo (after 3 yrs on it).  Nothing, not even a natural period for months.  At the end of December, she got onto Provera to chemically induce a menstruation and took 50mg Clomid during Day 3-7 (starting on Jan 7).  Anyway, did not seem like it worked since OPK during the targeted ovulation range detected nothing.  Did not go back onto Provera nor clomid since then yet. Skip ahead a bit, she just got a positive pregnancy result this past Saturday (2/20), but it was a very faint blue line that appeared almost immediately (was a generic Target-brand early detection pregnancy kit).  Retook the test (same brand/same box) this morning (2/22) and it was negative. . .NOTHING!  Has this happened to others?  What should we do next?

According to my wife, within the last 2 weeks, her appetite has increased (more hunger) even though her diet has remained the same, some slight weight gain, breasts feel heavier, fuller, and bigger, nipples more sensitive.  Also having more gas issues.  She said it's not mental, all physical.

Some google search suggest a chemical pregnancy (early miscarriage), others suggest false-negative.  Thoughts from real life experiences?  Thanks!

Thanks, everyone. My wife just started to "bleed" last night though not a lot yet (but she said it was bright red at the time). She said it does not feel like a period yet, and the tampon that she left in overnight had very little blood on it (almost like brown spottings).

Anyway, she took one of those pink box (can't remember the name, but it's a name brand not generic) test this morning, i.e. 3 days after the initial positive test and it was negative.

Sounds like your second test was faulty.  A negative target pregnancy test always has two lines, both vertical.  If pregnant, an additional horizontal line will appear creating a plus sign.

Sounds a lot like my story. I had a pos test on the 13th (generic walmart brand) then neg two days later with the same test and a digital. I had a neg test and blood screen from the doc the next day. I just took my other digital test today and it was pos. I don't know what to think.

Another suggestion just do a digital test less confusing and they will tell you like it is.  Also, if your wife is really early on there may be one best time of day for the most accurate result which is first thing in the morning (urine is the strongest).  Good luck :)

That's strange about the lines then.  The test kit on Saturday had only one line in each window (i.e. 2 lines total - one dark blue reference line in one window and one faint light blue line in the other window that appeared within 3 mintues).  The result from today's test had just one line (i.e. one window had the dark blue line, while the other window had nothing).  Again, same test kits from the same box.

I guess we'll wait a few more days and test with a pink dye kit.

I would use a pink dye test such as first response since blue dye tests are notorious for giving false positives.

The target tests are a bit tricky.  A negative test will have two lines,  one in the one window, and one in the other.  Many people mistake this for a positive test.  But a positive test will have two lines in one of the windows, that form a plus sign.  (Feel free to check out the pictures in my profile as I have a positive test taken on a generic target test.

False positives are very rare.  If she had a period right after that, I would say early miscarriage, but if she didn't get a period right after, I would say maybe the test was read incorrectly as target tests often are.
