gastritis and pregnancy

Dear doctor,

I am 34.5 yrs old and i have a girl baby of 3.5 yrs age. I and my husband want another baby. I have thyroid probem and its under control now. i am having eltroxin 100 mg daily. my question is presently i am having an inflammation in the stomach. and under treatment for that. i still ahve slight pain on the upper abdoinal position and heartburn. and continuing medicines for that. we had actually panned to conceive this month so that i can come back to kuwait from India after delivery before next july so that my elder child can join school in spetember. my most fertile days are coming in the next week. can i get pregnant when i am having gastritis? i am scared because i am taking medicnes for that now. i staretd folic acid in june itself to prepare for teh second pregnancy. i cannot delay my second delivery much becoz i am already 34.5  now. pls advise.. i am 50-50 while thinking about getting pregant again. my mnd is fluctuating whether i should or not. but my husband want one more child. im scared about tyroid too.. pls give me advise..

thanks  and rgds.

This is really a question you need to discuss w/ your doctor.  You definitely CAN get pregnant with  gastritis (do a search on "whatyoumakeme" , who used to post in the Maternal forum, she had a VERY severe case of this while pregnant and had to have several surgeries due to infection of her feeding ports).  Since you are on medication for your condition it is important to find out if this would harm a developing baby and what other treatment options would be available to you should your condition worsen or you suffer from complications during pregnancy.  Your condition shouldnt cause problems for you trying to conceive but its important to make sure that  you and baby are as safe as possible during this time - a consultation w/ a doctor before attempting to have a baby would be  highly advisable.

I didn't know if you realized it or not but if you go to the forums page and select one on the right side (that's where the ask a doctor and expert advice is usually asked and geven) under pregnancy or neonatology.  I have gotten pregnancy questions answered in both forums.  Sometimes it's hard to get in under the pregnancy one but even though it isn't really neonatal, they will either answer your question or pass it on to another doctor that can.  Good luck and let us know how you are doing.
