Btw Medicaid and medical are pretty much the same thing. We just call it medical since we live in California.
If you live on your own it might be easier to get, again if you don't work and even if you do you need to make under certain amount to qualify. If you live with your parents its still ok you just don't have to mention that you live with them. Just give your address and everything should run ok. Just again it may take a while. Especially if you don't push them.
Definitely apply for medical first. Sad thing is if your income is more than the poverty line they do end up sending you through covered California. I didn't want obamacare either but was denied medical because my husband made too much. The only thing I liked about covered California is it helps you pay for your monthly payment for insurance. Instead of like 450 for insurance we would end up paying 163. But that depends on what company and what insurance you get.
Btw the medical takes a lot longer now to process thanks to the healthcare reform so I say apply on time. It took me 3mos to find out I was denied for medical and now its too late for me to be covered by anything on my due date. I'm due the 30th of this month and I won't be covered until April 1st. So hurry and go to a an office so you can get advice. You can google a DPSS office close to you. Good luck!
If you are out of work and don't have insurance through your parents the doctors office usually refer you to Medi-cal! They will insure you while you are pregnant. I've had to do it before.
