Vicodin use during pregnancy

I am 31 years old and 6wks pregnant with my second child. I had a L4/5 spinal fusion two years ago and disabled since. I have a non-union and live in severe pain. I have taken Vicodin since and my obstrician says I can and should continue to take it and she prescribes it to me. She said the only thing is my baby will have withdrawls :{. Any feedback on any personal experience of patience with vicodin use and the health of their babies

Yes, me and Kendraerika have really had a rough time, but we have each other and it has made it so much easier to deal with. I don't know what I'd do without her either! Mommytobe101, you are at a very low dose so that's good but if it isn't helping your pain at all you may want to talk to your doctor about taking a does that will control your pain. Your still very early in your pregnancy and as long as your doing this safely, under your doctor's supervision you shouldn't worry about it. You can work with your doctor like Kendraerika and I am weaning off closer to delivery. Just make sure you tell your doctor how you feel about it. You are most definitely not alone hun, and like I said we will both be here for you if you need us:)

No just this one. I do have a sister with fibromyalgia and was on pain meds with my niece, and she is now over a year old and perfect!

I am so glad to know I am not alone! Thanks sooooo much. Just want to make sure I understood correctly... You have had a previous pregnancy while taking pain meds?

I am also on lortab and in the process of weaning off for delivery, I will go the last 8 weeks of my pregnancy drug free so that my child won't have to go through the withdrawals. I am doing this all with Dr supervision. Kendradawn and I both know how bad the withdrawals are, because we went through them, together, at the beginning of our pregnancies. She is very smart and caring, and without her, I don't know what I would do! It may be a good thing to talk to tour Dr about weaning off for delivery, also, if you want pain control during delivery, being dependant on pain meds like taking them regular, some if the iv psince meds will put you in instant withdrawal instead of helping.

Thank you for the comment! There are not many ppl out there that agree nor understand. Wow are you going thru it :( I have been weaning myself off the vicodin. I use to take Norco10/325 3-4 times daily. That is what my pain management doctor perscribed. My ob has me on Norco 5/325 and went from 2 to 1 a day now. I take half in the morning and half in the evening. That is a very low dose and only taking it now so the withdrawls r not so bad. Does not touch my pain!!! After my surgery I had to basically learn how to walk again and had very minimal use of my right leg. Above all just want whats best for my baby and I know how miserable withdrawls are and would never want my baby to have to experience them. Best of luck to you...

Oh yeah I meant to add, it's a difficult thing to have to take pain meds while pregnant for me. But as my OB has explained, the benefit out weighs the risk in cases like ours and it's better for baby that we are pain free. It's better to take the meds and control your pain than to be miserable and hurting, all that does is put baby under stress...and you as well, so that's not good.

I took lortab up until I found out I was expecting, then I weaned myself off. I am now 30 weeks and have had severe kidney problems with this pregnancy. The baby is in a position that's putting a block on my urinary tract and my bladder, so my kidneys aren't functioning properly and it's causing repetitive infections. Also I have kidney stones and am in the process of passing one as we speak. I've been hospitalized several times and I've had to take the pain meds off and on throughout all this. It is prescribed by my OB but I will not take them after 34 weeks. I've discussed this with my doctor and he supports me. I do not want to bring my child in the world and have to suffer, even if that means I have to be in pain for a few weeks. Your OB knows, so he can monitor you and baby and everything should be fine. That's just my personal choice that I make sure baby and I are 100% free of any drugs near delivery because I don't want him to go through withdrawals. This is my experience, I hope it helped some. If you wanna talk more please feel free. Good Luck with everything, and I'm so sorry you have chronic pain. It's difficult even when your not pregnant, I know:(
