MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi,
How are you?  Benign Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid is an autoimmune disease that is characterized by blistering lesions on mucous membranes in the oral mucosa (lining of the mouth) and conjunctiva (mucous membrane that coats the inner surface of the eyelids and the outer surface of the eye). Other areas that may be affected include the nostrils, esophagus, trachea and genitals. In this condition, autoantibodies react with proteins found in mucous membranes and skin tissue resulting in blistering lesions. The primary aim of treatment is to stop blister formation, promote healing and prevent scarring. This may be difficult to treat as it can affect so many different parts of the body. Medical treatment will depend on the  organs involved. It is important to identify factors that may cause exacerbation of the disease and avoid these  in the long run. This condition is predominantly a disease of the elderly. Talk to your doctor about this for proper management. Take care and do keep us posted.

I was just diagosed with the same thing - benign mucous membrane pemphigoid.  An oral surgeon did a biopsy on two spots o my gumes.  Water blisters form, pop and then the gum sloths off.  He was to call my eye doctor - evedently these blisters go to the eye and can cause blindness.  I am anxious to get it under control but no one doctor can decide what to do - very frustrating!
