can i carry herpes?

I just went on birth control about a month ago and before that I had all of the STD tests and pap smear and everything came up negative.  A few weeks later, I developed folliculitis, which was diagnosed by my gyno.  At the time, I worried that it could have been an STD but she said that it was definitely folliculitis, put me on antibiotics, and within a day or so I was fine.  However, about a day after I started having symptoms for folliculitis, my boyfriend started to get lesions and experienced pain during urination.  I figured that he probably got the folliculitis, but when he had a herpes culture done it came up positive.  Neither of us had ever had herpes symptoms before, so it was just a really strange coincidence then that he got that at the same time I got folliculitis.  He swears that it has to have been from me.  I  then went back to my gyno and had a blood test done for the herpes antibodies, which came up negative, but he hasn't had the blood tests done yet.  I have had three other partners before him and none of them have ever had herpes symptoms.  Also, I have been with my current boyfriend for about three months so it's odd that he just got diagnosed with herpes now because I never had an outbreak or anything (unless it had to do with the folliculitis, but we never had sex during that time).  So now I'm really confused.  If I carry herpes why did he all of a sudden get it, but none of my past partners (I think it's pretty unlikely that they would all be immune to it too).  Or is there a chance that he really had folliculitis and had a false positive herpes culture?

A positive culture for Herpes is very reliable. The culture is done with cell cultures andconfirmed with a DFA test. Should not give a false positive in a reliable lab.

a blood test will confirm if he has it or not. It doesnt tell where, just if someone has it.
