want opinion on use of zovirax

I was just wandering if any of you have used Zovirax cream on herpes outbreaks.  My doctor prescribed this to me and I have used it several times over the past few years.  The doctor that answers the STD questions on this website says that no cream help outbreaks, just meds like Valtrex.  I feel that I have gotten signifcant relief from discomfort and that the cream has aided in quicker healing.  I was wandering what you guys think.

Thanks so much.  That's a lot of good info for me to consider.

Your doctor is not up to date on herpes treatment. Zovirax cream only heals lesions half a day sooner than using a placebo. It also doesn't have any anesthetic properties to it to help with pain. The prescribing info even says it's not useful for herpes recurrences ( and it's benefits for primary ob's is fairly limited too ).  It's pretty much a waste of time and money :(

Switch to oral antivirals and start them at the very first sign of an ob. You can also use other topicals too at the same time - hit it from inside and out. For instance I prefer dermoplast spray ( the blue can for the genital area, not the red can ). It's a spray on topical anesthetic that helps to numb the lesions for pain/itch relief.  Depending on where your ob is you might want to consider a barrier cream like a baby butt product to help protect it from the sting of urine/irritation from clothing.  There are also many tried but true things like compresses with tucks wipes, compresses with domeboro's solution and even making your own compress out of a tea bag too to consider for pain relief and to help dry out lesions faster.   I also like to use tea tree oil on my lesions - it helps to dry them out and also has drying properties/anti-inflammatory/anti-bacterial/anti-viral properties to it.  There is also some limited info out there on chamomile oil also being effective.
