How many rounds of IVF do you attempt after 5th try at age 45?

Hello everyone! I am 45 years old and I just tried a 5th round of IVF with my own eggs with no success.  Has anyone my age or older tried IVF with their own eggs as many times as I have had? I don't know if I should continue or just give up.  My husband is not talking very much about what we just went through which makes me think that he might be done but I am afraid to ask. I would appreciate your input.

Hi Ladies,

Its so heartbreaking to read all of your stories and personally know how your heart feels with all your hopes and dreams and disappointments.

I just wanted to give you all some encouragement because so many people on here gave it to me when I needed it most.

I am 43 y/o - will be 44 in July.    I'm currently 25 weeks pg with a healthy little boy (my own egg).    I started ttc with my new dh when I was 41.    I have a 9 y/o little girl from a previous marriage and he had no children.   He is 39 y/o.     We were 37 and 41 when we started trying and my fsh was 13, his morphology was 9%, vs the 14% they like.   We tried for 6 months on our own, did get pg once, but the beta numbers never doubled.   We then went to the fertility clinic and got in gratefully with an awesome RE.   He told me that since I still ovulated regularly that my chances of still having a good egg left were good.   We just had to play the numbers game and wait for that one good egg.   The SH number was a little high, but he still thought we stood a great chance.   We agreed that he would be brutally honest with me and only spend my money on things that "really worked".    We started immediately on femara (which works better for older women than clomid) and gonal-f injections.   The theory was to bring more follies to the party each month to better increase our chances.   I went thru 3 cycles of this with IUI and nothing happened.   I was set up for my 4th IUI on christmas eve of 2009 but due to a snow storm couldn't make it in.    We did our "homework" at home and amazingly enough...I got pg :).   February 14 however I had a m/c :(.      I then tried 2 more cycles with the meds and IUI and....nothing.    I then started acupuncture because I had developed cysts from the meds.   I went to acupuncture every week for a LLOOOOOONG time.     July of 2010 I was so frustrated that I looked into donor eggs.    My emotional strength had finally given out and I knew I desperately wanted my dh to have his own child.   If this was the only way I could give him this gift, I was completely willing to do it.    We selected a donor, however were in the middle of a cycle, so I told my dh that as soon as this cycle was done, we would start to get in sync with the donor.    I went in for my CD 10 u/s, and was told that I had an extremely thin lining and a huge 39mm cyst on my right ovary.   I did have 2 follies on my left, but the RE who was always soooo positive, said "it doesn't look good".     I'd never had a bad cycle before, I always had great lining and lots of follies, but no luck.    I went home, threw everything away, declined to do an IUI and released all the stress from my heart and looked forward for once for AF to arrive.   2 weeks passed, I had all the symptoms that she was coming, however I had a very strange feeling in my heart the day she was due, so I got up, took a test and had 2 dark pink lines.    No one was more shocked than me.     I then assumed that I would m/c like always and this was only prolonging my donor situation.

Well 25 weeks have gone by, a great CVS test result, and I'm cherishing every single day and every single moment of morning sickness, sort BB's, leg cramps, and weight gain.

Looking back on everything, I had 5 IUI's with no results.   The 3 times we tried the "ol fashioned way", it worked.   I know that's strange statistically, but its what happened for me.

Ladies......this CAN happen to you too.

Futuremama2010 said it best....its like a jackpot, you never know when that next cycle is "the ONE".

I wish there was a magic pill, or a magic herb, or a magic treatment......there isn't.    Its just time and patience.   We all know how to do this, its just the magical moment when the sperm meets the egg.    If I could have had a crystal ball a year ago when I was so devestated to see how my life would turn out this year, it would have made things so much easier.    I do think bringing more eggs each month did increase my chances and I think the accupuncture was key to getting my whole system....just healthier and more efficient.

I just wanted to try to give you all just one more cycle of faith and encouragment....cause it just might be "the One" for you.

Best of luck to all of you, may you all be blessed in 2011 :)

Hi Ladies,

DFBB,  Welcome to our group! There are many women that do seem to benefit from accupunture.  I'm sure you will hear from those who felt it helped them.  I haven't tried it and to be honest probably won't.  It's just at this point, I don't think it will make much of a difference for me.  It is difficult and frustrating to go through this, but if you can try to see another RE - maybe there are different protocols you can try.  Hang in there! Just remember all of us are hear for you.

Miss_Amy_2009, I just came across a clinical trial yesterday at the center I am going to.  Unfortunately I do not qualify for it, but for those of you who are interested in it, the only cost is your pretests, after that IVF is completely free.  They are located in NYC, and they do work with out of state patients if you're willing to travel.  It's called the New Hope Clinical Trial, NY.  There are also a lot of other places that do these trials, and yes offer grants, you just have to really research where they are and what they offer.  I've been lucky that my husbands insurance has covered everything.  It's difficult enough when you having trouble ttc, but when you add finances on top of that, its more difficult.  I wish you the best of luck in your journey, and I'm sure a lot of women will answer your question as well.  We are all here for each other.

Take care, Joann

Hi everyone!

I was wondering...

Are there options for paying for IVF?? My insurance doesn't cover the cost. I had a consultation with an infertility specialist and found out that it will cost me 12000.00 (they want 6000.00 down). I don't have that kind of money or credit. I'm 40 and I have no children yet.

Is there any funding programs/grants/etc for someone like me? I feel as though life just won't be complete until I have my own baby. :(

Any information will be appreciated....HELP!

Hi Ladies I am new to this group. I share your pain and frustration. This is such a difficult journey. I am 40 and had 3 rounds of IVFs and 1IUI. I am at the point that I am tired of all the hormone injections. I started acupunture with herbal drinks a months ago.  When I brought my medical records to the acupuncturist (who specializes in infertility treatment), she pointed out that this particular fertility center I went to seemed to focuse on quantity over quality. When I had my egg retrival at 37, they retrieved 20 and froze 12 embryos, but all failed. I am still not giving up the dream of being a natural mom. Has anyone tried acupunture with good results? We have "unexplainable" infertility.
