Decrease Energy Level = Thyroid Problem?

I have been doing some research lately on my energy level, which has been very low except for the day prior to my period. I have a history of thyroid problems in my family but I also have 3- and 5-year-old children. Could this be a thyroid issue or a symptom of being a busy mom? I’ve seen things on the Internet that indicate it could be endocrine-related. If so, is this something I should schedule an appointment with an endocrinologist for, or would you recommend I see my primary care physician?

Hi Unfortunately yes it sounds like thyroid I am on progeserone 14 days leading up to my period 2 x 400 mg's suppositories helps with the exaggerated PMT, the extreme tiredness and heavy bleeding.
The first signs of thyroid trouble for me were the pmt and period problems.

Just make sure that along with TSH they test for the actual, biologically active thyroid hormones, free T3 and free T4 (FT3 and FT4), not total T3 and T4.  FT3 is the most important because it is four times as active as FT4, plus FT3 correlates best with hypo symptoms.  Depending on your doctor you may have to insist on testing for FT3 and FT4, since many don't think it is worthwhile, but it really is.  Don't accept anything less.  When you get the doctor to agree, I would even go to the extreme of checking with the lab to make sure they know it is FT3 and FT4, so that they don't make a mistake.  You'd be amazed at how often the lab does the usual and does not test for the Frees.

After test results are available, suggest that you get a copy of the lab report and post results and reference ranges here so that members can help interpret.  The doctor is required to provide a copy upon your request.  It is a good idea to always get a copy and keep for future reference.

I've had hypothriodism for 20 years. I get the blood work done regularly and I know when mine is out of whack because I am TIRED all the time, no energy. I agree with the other 2 for sure. your GP will give you a simple blood test and you will know then.

Your gp can run the proper thyroid testing including to determine any abnormalties and in the event that they're are, you will be referred to an endocrinologist.
