Dr. Mark Lupo

Dear Dr. Mark Lupo:

Hypothyroidism runs in my family.  I have been suffering from Acid Reflux.  Could this possibly be a symptom of hypothyrodism?  I'm almost the age my sister was when she contracted this disorder.  Even the over-the-counter acid pills my Ear, Nose and Throat Doctor suggested I try didn't work .  I'm staying away from the foods he recommend not eating as well.

If I'm diagnosed with Hypothyroidism will the Acid Reflux go away by itself?

Thank you

Dr. Lupo will post on the expert side. He rarely surfs over here.

If I can add my 2 cents, I would tell you

Yes, it is a major overlooked symptoms and I am one that suffered that horribly. Nothing worked in fact, meds for it - made me feel worse.

Google up hypothyroidism and acid reflux - you will find alot of information.

One key to remember. Being hypothyroid - your system will slow down. You have depleted acid in the stomach - not too much, so taking acid "reducers" make your system worse when you are hypo.

Also google PH balance and hypothyroidism. Things will make sense when you learn about that.
