TSH results

I have many symptoms that point to hypothyroidism, dry skin, thinning hair, insomia, low body temp, low energy levels and weight gain.  My TSH was 3.47 which according to my Dr. was within normal range as was my free T4.  However I have read on several different websites that endocrinologists now consider TSH readings over 3 to be hypothyroid.  I have brought this to my Dr's attention but he says that normals vary from lab to lab-depending on the type of test performed?  I just want to feel better.

Lord............... please .................... I would bet since you were Dx with hypothyroidism you are already on meds.

Please honkieze........ give this poster some recourse to feel better.

Here is some facts :  The AACE reference range which is not used alot in treatment for Hypothyroidism is .3 - 3.0. You are hovering on the high end - so you may be more symptomatic at this time.  Your physician sounds flexible on the reference ranges giving you information on the flucuating reference ranges between labs. I would bet his lab probably uses a range that goes to 5.5 maximum - which in your doctors eyes puts you at a normal state.   Usually, a thyroid patient will feel much better around 1.0 - 1.5 maybe 2.0 tops. This all depends on YOUR hormones and how you are made up.  I wouldn't consider you true hypo - but maybe at a sub clinical hypo state with definate hypo symptoms.

Has your doctor increased any thyroid meds for you? You are at a level right now where a "tweek" of dosages may benefit you alot with your symptoms.  Usually a little anxiety is present at this range. Is that an issue for you?

You are classically carrying hypo symptoms and it may be very helpful if you "bug" your doctor to treat your symptoms and not your labs.  It helps to let them know you understand the new reference ranges from the AACE - so you want him/her to understand you are symptomatic.  If you feel more comfortable reading up on the AACE here is one link to clear the controversy:
