12 Year Old Son Has High FREE T3

2 1/2 years ago my 12 year old son, Ben, had a fever which caused enough muscle pain so that he would not walk for 3 days. Over the next 2 years, he had increasing bouts of muscle pain which actually had him in a wheelchair for 2 months. Mutliple tests, many doctor visits, and 2 trips to Boston Childrens' Hospital were inconclusive. 10 months after the intital fever, Ben started having a lot of anxiety. He missed his entire 5th grade of school last year. We hired a naturopath to research Ben's records and have been working with him for awhile now. Since Ben continues to have muscle pain, particularly the day after he has exercised heavily, our doctor ordered some thyroid tests (also Epstein Barr and C-Reactive Protein which were both OK). His TSH was 0.70mlU/L, FREE T4 wa 0.9 ng/dL, and his FREE T3 was 4.0 pg/mL. What do you think...could this be related to his pain and anxiety?

I need to clarify a statement.
The lab range I posted was for a Free T3 test from Quest.

I would consider 4.0 just a tiny bit high if the upper limit was 4.2., possibly enough to cause symptoms. I don't know if his makes a difference or not.

Children and teenagers have slightly different normal test values than adults.

Different labs use different high/low values, so the ranges vary from lab to lab. My lab uses a range of  230-420 which can be expressed as 2.3-4.2.

It is hard to comment on the test results without knowing the lab limits. I'm not sure even then that I can speak acurately about what his Free T3 should be.

His TSH is not abnormally low, so his Free T3 can't be too far off.

Muscle pain and anxiety can be experienced with thyroid disease. It is very common. There should be other symptoms, as well.

Do you happen to have a copy of the test results? Could you post the limits for the tests?
