Her Recent Tyroid Dx/Meds are driving us ALL CRAZY!

My mom thought she was having gastro issue from yrs or colitis/diverticulitis. Her belly became enormous over a few days so he sent her to the ER for a paracentisis r/o ascites. They found her thryoid was over 200 and started her on 200 mcg Synthyroid and was discharged. The next day we thought she was having a stroke, very disoriented, in hysterics over everything and refused to go to the ER. We watched her throughout the night and the next day wasnt as out of control hormonally but still bad. Its been about a week and she is still not right. She keeps repeating thing over and over, posting notes everywhere, swares everyone is lying about everything, not sleeping. We have no idea whoi this person is now.  Is this normal reaction to the meds??  When will we see some progress? The whole family is on pins and needles, taking shifts to be there but it is weighing on all of us horribly. We need some help now!!

I agree that 200 mcg is too large a dose to start on - they should have started her low and gradually built it up, retesting prior to each increase.

I would get her to a doctor immediately.

I wouldn't be just waiting and watching, take the meds off her and call a doctor, that sounds very dangerous..Some of those symptoms could already be a small stroke..

Why did they start her on 200? Depending on her age or condition, a good endocrinologist would have started her on 25 or 50 mcg and gradually worked her up to the correct level.

This is very unsafe. If she were my mother, I would not let her take the pills, until you can get her to a good endo.

The reaction to the meds can be psychotic even to a lower initial dose of 50 mcg/day ,it will not get better ,actually it will become worst.

Call her doctor immediately  !!!
She can have real stroke !!

"They found her thryoid was over 200" - you mean TSH levels, right?

What I can tell you is 200mcg of synthroid is too much to start out on, from nothing. Hyper reactions could result. Hyper includes some possible mental reactions as well. I cant comment on your specific mental details.

Most people start on a lower dose and 'ease' into the optimal dose. Big change for the body to handle at once.
