It doesn't matter if it says benign, if the nodule contains at least 75% Hurthle cells the latest thinking is to err on the side of caution and take it out. The new classification of Hurthle cell adenoma is now labelled as a cancer. Even if it is still contained inside the nodule. If it has less than 75% cells in the nodule they will do a watchful wait and repeat biopsies in either 6 monthly or yearly intervals, depending on the doctor.
I guess I should have clarified, the pathologist says benign even though there are hurthle cells present. No recommended course of treatment.
Hi there. I had Hurthle's Cells (as it is spelled here in Australia!) some 3 years ago in my right side.
There is no need for a second opinion, only if you are not happy in the treatment options.
Hurthle's Cells are formed by follicular cells which for some unknown reason change and start to produce a cancerous cell. Now don't freak out at that! Provided the HC are contained in a nodule then surgical removal is the best option.
It sounds that your thyroid has died off and is ready for surgical removal anyway.
I had a similar problem with thyroid and had it removed.
If you need more info, don't hesitate to ask!
Cheers!
