Hi everyone!
I thought I'd share something that might help someone else...first, a brief history...In 2006 I was diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism that was caused by a parathyroid tumor. This caused the calcium levels in my blood to rise to near-lethal levels. After the tumor was removed, I had "hungry bone syndrome" where my bones were "starving" for calcium and sucked it out of my bloodstream faster than I could supplement it. This caused hypocalcemic symptoms (tingling all over, bone aching, mock-fibromyalgia, fatigue). This was resolved after the parathyroids and calcium found their "happy place". In 2008 I underwent a chemotherapy type treatment for my liver. The interferon ticked off my thyroid causing thyroiditis which later "flipped" to hypothyroid and after several months, straightened out. My poor thyroid finally found it's "happy place" and my levels have remained stable.
About a year ago, I began having heart palpitations that the Drs can't figure out why. Anxiety and endocrine causes have been ruled out. I have a hunch the palpitations are from the start of perimenopause as female issues seem to be developing. (Just what I need...Sigh.)
So, in July, I began having what I thought was hypothyroid issues. -Low body temp (96.5-97.3), dry skin, tired all the time, no sex drive, irregular periods, slow thinking, weight gain, etc.. Tests showed all was okay except vitamin D was almost non-existent. I began supplementing with 10,000 units/day along with 2,000 mg of calcium citrate. Two weeks later I could feel the difference. My body temp returned to normal, I began to lose weight, but my bones suddenly began aching unbelievably and the all-over tingles came back. I think somehow the vitamin D levels rising caused my bones suddenly to realize they'd been "missing out" on the calcium, and went into overdrive trying to reclaim it...I shared this suspicion with my GP who now thinks I'm a kook...Puh.
Anyhow, since then, it feels like my body is constantly trying to stabilize the calcium levels. I'll go from feeling hypercalcemic (muscle spasms, twitches, frequent urination, heartburn, heart palpitations, hot flashes, blood pressure rise) to hypocalcemic (muscle and joint pain, all-over tingles, tired, etc.).
What do you guys think? Has anyone experienced this sort of thing? I tried to reason with my Dr that one lab test doesn't always tell all, but she blew me off. I'll see my endo in November, but until then...~MM
