Synthroid and exercise

Hi....I have to say that since i have been on  synthroid ( for about 1 year now)...i have gained about 25 lbs....i cannot seem to lose it at all....my dr had said this type of thyroid problem should cause weight loss, not gain....not seeing this at all...actually, total opposite....last night i joined the gym which i will start tonight....wondering if anyone found that taking this medication along with workouts at the gym have helped with the weight gain?

Lori is correct about the importance of getting your thyroid hormone levels sufficient to alleviate symptoms, including low metabolism.  If you would please post whatever thyroid test results and reference ranges you have, members will be happy to interpret.

Hi  Kim,

If your levels are truly where they should be, you should not be gaining weight if you are eating correctly.  Diet is the biggest factor in weight loss, and exercise helps out a lot too.  I'm reading a great book by Jillian Michaels - Master Your Metabolism.  I haven't completed it yet, but it seems good so far.  Also, there's another book I've read which was very informative and helpful.  It's named The Thyroid Diet by Mary J Shomon.  If you are truly eating clean, etc. and still now seeing results, I'd suggest you have your Dr. recheck your levels.  You need to find the level that is right for your body.  Not everyone reacts the same to the  "normal range" that doctors go by.
Good luck!
Lori
