My husband had TT June of 2011, put on synthroid - dosages have been adjusted several times, TG levels rising so first RAI is scheduled for this month. But, Dr didn't make him go hypo...he's doing the Thyrogen shots and LID for two weeks..from what I've read, you aren't supposed to do the Thyrogen shots for your initial RAI....any one heard of this for the first RAI? He got the first shot yesterday, his second today, and RAI is tomorrow am. Then he waits a week, goes back and has full body scan. Good thing is his results will be gone over with him by his endo right after the scan.
Yeah, the holidays is a pain for medical treatment (both of my surgeries were during the holidays). Can they at least get you in during January?? Just remember, of all the types of thyroid cancer, you have the slowest growing and most treatable.
I can understand your delay in having RAI, since you only had a single pap cancer and undetectable Tg. Its fine just to monitor it
Mine was multi-focal and being a guy puts me in a slightly higher risk.. Isn't it a pain when everything shutdowns for Xmas..
. . . (don't you hate when you push the Post Comment button then think of one more thing . . . )
I didn't have my first RAI until about three years after my TT (single 5mm papillary carcinoma) and two of my sisters who had cancer haven't ever had RAI - their labs remain level. My endo wouldn't have encouraged me to have RAI if my labs would have been stable but they started climbing rapidly.
Papillary carcinoma is slow growing so not having it until February shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't put it off for years though.
Good luck
