Is there a relationship between thyroid ca and breast ca?

I'm just curious if there is a higher risk of getting breast cancer after having thyroid cancer (tt and RAI)?  New Year's Eve night my husband and I rang in the new year to a very healthy and cancer free year and then New Year's day I found a lump in my breast.  Maybe I spoke too soon.  I am now beginning the wonderful whirlwind of tests and appointments.

Oh, I am so sorry!  For some of us the saying "when it rains, it pours" is too relevant.  :-(

Short answer to your question, according to many research studies:  yes.  Sorry.  :-(

For a full list of the research, run a Google search on "thyroid effects second primary cancer"

Here is one article that is pretty good too.
http://thyroid.about.com/od/thyroidcancer/a/secondcancer.htm

Question, do you have fibrocystic breast disease???  Hormone changes (yes, thyroid too) can make the fibrous tissue in fibrocystic breast disease change similar to a monthly menstrual cycle.  This can make "lumps" that are actually normal fibrocystic areas feel larger.  Your mammogram (with possible ultrasound) can tell the difference.

The increased risk of secondary cancer with thyroid cancer (regardless of RAI) is exactly the reason I've stopped my HRT following my double ovary removal.  I have an aunt with breast cancer and another who died of ovarian cancer and I know I'm at increased risk of another cancer.  It's so maddening!!

I'm hoping its fibrocystic, or a clogged duct, or a swollen lymph node from an infection or . . . SOMETHING else!!!

You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Please let us know what the test show!!!
