Kidney Shut Down

Can untreated hypothyroidism cause a kidney to shut down?

It's my fiance'.  He lost his job and insurance in May and couldn't afford meds so he just quit taking them.  I didn't know he quit them.  2 weeks ago he got really sick, thought it was the flu.  Tried to treat symptoms for 5 days and finally just took him to the dr.  ended up in ER on IV's for the day.  Helped a lot, appetite returned, color & energy got better, but got a call 3 days later that his kidney has apparently shut down and he needs to go to specialist. He's back on Synthroid (425mcg/day) but still no insurance or income, just started new job for a fraction of what he used to make!  Says now he will have to wait to see specialist in 30 days when the insurance starts.  Can the kidney function again?  Will waiting be detrimental?  (His dr. is trying to help, but the specialist is going to be MUCH TOO EXPENSIVE!  We already have the dr. and hospital bills to pay somehow.)
