High heart rate after left part of thyroid removed.

My heart rate at rest is 82-100. I can walk 10 steps and its up to 110 or higher. Anyone else have this problem

Hi Heatherkj76,

Did you just have surgery (like last few days?)?  My immediate thought is that you might have some inflammation, a complication from the surgery, or an adverse reaction to after surgery medication.  If you are concerned about your heart rate, you should probably contact your doctor/surgeon or the hospital and let them know what is going on (and they should know if this is a normal response to surgery or something you should be more concerned about).

I had a lobectomy and did not experience a resting heart rate spike, but that doesn't mean your elevated heart rate isn't a normal response to surgery.  (I just googled it, and some people respond to surgery and anesthesia in different ways including increased blood pressure or a higher heart rate - if it is just a response to undergoing the surgery, it should adjust itself as you heal).  Medication given after the surgery might be influencing your heart rate too (I was given Percocet, which in some people can elevate the heart rate).

Did your doctor start you on replacement thyroid hormone after the surgery?  This could also influence your heart rate.  (My doctor didn't put me on hormone until a month after my lobectomy when I had "clinical hypothyroidism").

A heart rate spiking from 80 at rest to 110 when you take a few steps - I am a runner, and when I try to exercise when I'm "recovering" from an illness like a cold or stomach virus, my heart rate will spike from low 60s bpm at resting to 130 bpm even when I'm just walking (and usually that's an indication that I shouldn't be trying to go for a walk right then).  It's part of the body's recovery response, and it may be your body telling you to just take it easy after the surgery.

If you are concerned, you should definitely contact your doctor.

I hope this is just your body's response to the surgery, and that your recovery goes well and you feel better soon!
