Pre-medication:
TSH 2.800 uU/ML 0.340 - 5.600 uU/ML
I was subclinical, but had other concerns such as higher glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, and weight problems. The plan was to treat the thyroid issues in order to reduce the other factors. It made sense.
My previous lab results 6 weeks after starting medication (no T3 values were tested)
TSH 0.910 uU/ML 0.340 - 5.600 uU/ML
T4 FREE 1.08 NG/DL 0.61 - 1.81 NG/DL
Looks good, right? Except I felt absolutely awful.
While I was on the meds it became increasingly difficult to function, which is why I stopped. I understand the need for time in order for everything to level off, but something was seriously not right and was getting progressively worse each day. Unfortunately, my regular doc doesn't seem to believe in T3 tests or meds which is why I'll be seeing an endocrinologist.
Sincere thanks for the insight. I'm trying to learn everything I can.
I calculated my Free T3/Reverse T3 ratio to be 12.7 (0.127).
Oh! I'm sorry. I didn't realize there was a variation from lab-to-lab.. Here are the corrected results with the ranges and units included.
TSH: 1.51 mIU/L ( 0.40-4.50 )
Free T4: 1.3 ng/dL ( 0.8-1.8 ng/dL )
Rev T3: 22 ng/dL ( 8-25 ng/dL )
Free T3: 2.8 pg/mL ( 2.3-4.2 pg/mL )
At the time I was on 50 mcg of Tirosint daily.
Please post the reference ranges for your FT3 and FT4 and RT3. They vary lab to lab, so they have to come from your own lab report.
So, in these labs, your FT4 is right where it should be at 50% of range. However, your FT3 is low of the 50+% guideline. It's only 26% of range. That could indicate a conversion issue. Since you'd only been on meds for a couple of months, it could also indicate that your body is still in the rebalancing process.
You calculated correctly. Your FT3:RT3 ratio is 12.7. That's a little on the low side. Most people say it should be over 20.0...my personal opinion is that upper teens is probably fine.
Your system is still in flux. You could continue T4 meds and see if conversion ramps up (my FT3 kept climbing for quite some time after my FT4 reached a stable level), or you could try adding some T3 to your meds.
