I also had the works (sono, scan &fna) in 07 (rt side) which came back benign with follicular clusters and again in 09 (rt & left) came back benign with favor follicular neoplasm on right and Hurthle cell Neoplasm in left. Although the fna was benign, my doc did not think that I should keep the thyroid but have a TT because of the results eventhough she says that its probably benign but can't depend on the fna to detect cancer 100%. I personally will have another opinion without showing the doc my results and instead have the doc start from scratch. It's amazing how they say that only 5% of people will have Thyroid Cancer....well" to me' it seems higher than that, especially reading posts from different sites about people who were diagnosed.
Welcome to the nodule guessing game...I had four nodules from .8 cm up to 2.1 cm. Three on right, one on left, left measured 1.6 cm. All solid, all vascular, however the one on the left was mixed solid/cystic, FNA biopsy concluded "benign follicular clusters", which was NOT diagnostic for cancer, ENT said only way to know is to remove it and biopsy. I wanted to keep thyroid function but was having difficulty swallowing and get hoarse (I am a singer, that was unbearable). So I opted to have the three on the right side removed, maybe this would 1. cure the difficulties, and 2. give me an answer on the cancer. The operation worked, I was fine, had thyroid function, and no swallowing/hoarseness. BUT! Then the path report revealed to small microcarcinomas, 1 and 2 mm. I was bummed. Endo said wait and watch, they're only small tumors, but all three ENT's said "TAKE IT OUT!" So after much angst and thought, I decided to remove the other side and wow am I glad I did. A big 1.5 CM tumor on the left and an additional micro. Four tumors, fours nodules, but no cancer in the nodules, the cancer was in the thyroid tissue...So, I don't know what to tell you, but most of the time they are benign, mine were...But surprise! The moral of the story is keep vigilant, don't dismiss them, do your homework, be informed, look for any information at all on the net, and good luck!
I have a very similar case like yours. The report is almost the same as your first report. The doctor suggested surgery but I really don't know if it is necessary. Did you have surgery? Do you need to take any medication? What's your opinion? Thanks!
I now recalling your first question:)
If nodule is found benign, it usually observed for some time [3months] then if it keeps growing, the nodule is removed [but not the whole thyroid] . I looked into some studies regarding possible benign to cancer transformation of the thyroid nodule, but there is no sure answer based on the broad studies.
Some benign nodules can have minor presence of microfollicular clusters; if nodule is almost entirely composed from the microfollicular tissue, then it is a different story.
Sometimes another biopsy with proton resonance study of follicular cells obtained from the nodule can say if this nodule has a good chance of being a cancer.
The first report of FNA slides said Follicular lesion along with comments. On the first
report part of it reads- The differential diagnosis includes follicular adenoma, adenomatous nodule , nodular goiter , follicular carcinoma and less likely follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma . Maybe I need more help to interpret this but I though it was ruling out
carcinoma ?
The second report said Benign with cystic components . I do not have the full report from that second lab have not received paper copy yet just a phone call from my surgeon .
What report was originally saying?
