Methimazole/atenolol questions -

Hello.  I am hyperthyroid - the issues I face with it basically are a faster pulse rate - usually 90- 105 or so at rest.  I am a little more edgy also and fast to 'snap' at my family..  (patience is wearing a little).. My Endocrinologist has suggested I think about surgery as the right side of my thyroid is now a fairly large thyroid nodule.  She says that if I get surgery to remove that side, the other side will kick in & start working (it isn't as of now - only the right thyroid which is overactive).  She also told me that if I choose no surgery, I can get the thyroid 'killed' and go on medication.  I am very undecided at this point.  I don't particularly want to go through surgery (as I have to have my gallbladder out later this summer, as well)... though I am nervous about 'killing' my thyroid & then having to do a trial of this or that/messing with doses to 'fit' one to me that works.  I also do not want to GAIN weight (I am one of those 'isolate' hyperthyroids who haven't really lost much weight at all & am already overweight).  ugh!  She has prescribed Methimazole for my hyperthryoid to see if that helps my levels come down closer to normal range.. also gave me Atenolol to make my heart rate slower & even..  I have had these medications for over a week and haven't started them.  I have seen so many side effects with Methimazole, that it makes me nervous to start it!  Also, the atenolol just plain makes me nervous in itself - just the thought of taking it makes me afraid.  I know I need to take the medication before they can actually either do surgery on me or kill my thyroid but I just don't want to end up in the emergency room from side effects!  (I'm not a good pill popper)..
Any thoughts from anyone who has tried these medications & how they did?  I am new to hyperthyroidism and still feel overwhelmed...

Thanks so much for your help.
