Please help me...

I am a single mother.  I have been through some very hard times with my daughter who just turned 18 in June.  She has been diagnosed from a.d.h.d , to bi polar, to post traumatic syndrome, to sever affective disorder ( low potassium).  Back in Feb.o8 she was given 3 meds albuteral, flagyl, and low ortho birth control.  Not even 2 days of being on these meds she has never been the same. Does this make sense??? She has had many mania's, reverted back to a 2-3 yr old stage, has severe seperation anxiety disorder along with repetitive compulsive symptons.  Due to not finding any one to take her in because of not having mental coverage and shortages in my area for Psychiatrists and or them not understanding she is not mentally capable of setting appointments or going  on her own...it seems her being 18 is working against me.  I recently tried going  the nutritional route where we do a major change in her diet where she does bio feed back and takes shake supplements, certain vitamins with this.  I also had her start seeing a chiropractor who showed me damage from trauma in her kneck, along with this  major swelling in her intestines and that she has* calcification of the thyroid.
All I want to do is get her help and better.  I do not know what kind of doctor to seek for this and what this means(Calcification???  Cancer???  How severe is this??? and is it treatable??? All I know is diet is important and that i was told she was a carb hog. Can anyone??? some one ???lead me in the right direction.  I am a wreck trying to keep an eye on her 24/7 w all her mania episodes. My Baby is gone mentally and even part physically and it is literally killing me!!!! One thing i noticed is it get's really bad every other month right before her period.  Any input would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your time..  Siincerely Stressed Beyond Limits

I just want to Thank all of you...  This is a wonderful sight.  I looked on one of the links (New York/ Thyroid ) to educate myself on thyroid symptoms and problems.  I know swollen lymph nodes runs in the family.  I know my Maternal Grandmother was grey by the time she was 16. I know my Mom died at 32 from a brain anuerism when i was 5. I have yet to find how serious the prognosis is for a calicified thyroid but i am praying their will be a positive teatment or out come.
My daughter got her period at a very early age of 10 yrs. old.  We have had a lot of mania episodes over the years. With having my mother die when i was 5 and being a motherless child i thought with every thing we have gone through with Ash that well it was just teenage phases.  When i grew up there was no dianosing of a.d.h.d, bipolar etc.
I know she has more trauma's in her life that any little girl should ever have to go through.  This breaks my heart but i just keep trying to have faith and keep us going.
All of your help makes sense and I will be working on setting up appointments.  Thank you all for your input and kindness, it is very much appreciated....

Hi...I'm a special needs teacher (28 years with teens) and I have 2 kids over 18 (adhd, add) so I know how hard it is...

kids with bi-polar or adhd are constantly changing because they are growing (a child's brain continues to develop until about age 25) so their meds are hard to get right (and keep right)...the symptoms are so similar it's sometimes hard to diagnose; and the meds for one are wrong for the other...

Here are some suggestions that have worked for me...

...look for a good family practice dr or gyn(since she's 18 and on birth control) and have your daughter sign the necessary form to allow them to communicate with you.  Ask for a complete physical with blood work.

...contact the MH/MR (stands for mental health mental retardation in PA, your state will have something similar) for low cost treatment.  Call the school in your neighborhood they will know who provides this service.  Again, if she signs...they can talk to you.

...if she is still in high school; contact her guidance counselor and ask them for help.  The school may have a student assistance program that helps students with problems get the services they need.

Good luck...Sandy

Get her in to an endocrinologist or ENT - she needs a *complete* thyroid panel run and an ultrasound/CT of the thyroid.

Having thyroid levels off can *really* mimic, or exaberate, mental illness.  My daughter is bipolar too - she just happened to get caught up in the family's thyroid cancer problems.  When her thyroid was removed (*huge* family history of thyroid cancer and she had multiple suspicious nodules which turned out to be "precancerous") and she was put on thyroid meds her moods leveled off and she became very, very stable.  She has now learned that she needs to stay on her meds constantly.

Also, do you know what caused the trauma in her neck?  Could there also be some brain damage?  Has she been to a neurologist??

Just a couple of thoughts.

HUGS to you

I am so sorry about your daughter and the problems you are having.  I sincerly hope you and she receive some help.

I am not an expert on anything, but I do know that albuteral can make you hyper.  My son used it for asthma and it took a while for it to level out.  He would be hyper and have trouble sleeping for a few days until his body adjusted.

An endocrinologist is a specialist for the thyroid.  I do not really know what kind of Dr. you need.  I would just like to send my prayers and hope that you can hang on and see some resolution soon.
