Post thyroidectomy treatment

I am specifically interested in feedback from folks who have had or know about problems associated with only using Synthroid after having the thyroid removed.  Has Armour worked? or at least a T3 supplement to the Synthroid.

Thanks for the encouragement.  If I go on Armour I'll try to post my results back out here.

I understand and know how distressing symptoms can be.  I hope you find what you need and that it works out for you.

I understand your frustration, especially with the weight issues.  I hope the Armour gives you some relief and would be very interested to know how it goes for you.

Thank you for the words of wisdom.  It's not really that I'm anti-Synthroid as much as I don't want to continue on with these symptoms if adding a T3 product like Cytomel or switching to a different drug altogether would give me some relief.

Thanks so much for the feedback.  Did you have any trouble getting on Amour?  Was your doctor the one that suggested it?

About 30 years but the symptoms have been much worse since I had a total hysterectomy and have had to begin hormone replacement therapy.  I had just assumed that between nearing 50 and the other issues that this just must be life but I recently came across some of the web feedback on poor results with Synthroid and got interested enough to Google my way here.  Thanks for asking.

I had my TT one year ago and I am on Armour. This drug has done wonders for me. I did the Synthroid thing and it did not work for me. The only issue I really have is tweeking at times. My anxiety, fatigue, hairloss has all stopped!!

Good luck!

Sorry you're having so many issues.  May I ask how long you have been on that med?

Synthroid helps and has proven more effective than the generics of it but symptoms of poor sleep, dry skin, low sex drive, exhaustion, feeling cold, inability to lose weight, and high cholesterol all still persist. Adjusting the Synthroid helps control the exhaustion but the other symptoms are unaffected.

BTW - I take a similar med to Synthroid and like nissah46 haven't had a issue with it since my own TT 2 1/2 years ago.

Are you having a problem being on Synthroid?

From what I’ve been told and read, and in speaking only about anyone who’s had a total thryoidectomy:  Armour Thyroid or any other natural desiccated medication is not recommended due to it being less consistent than the synthetic levothyroxine meds.  Since there’s no remaining thyroid tissue to accommodate any variations, it’s important to go with one that’s more likely to behave the same way every time it’s taken.

Synthroid is a T4 med that then converts to T3.  Adding T3 to a treatment plan is only necessary if there is a problem with that conversion process.  The dr can tell, by using a configuration, whether that problem is taking place.  Even if it is, the T3 the dr would add probably would be a synthetic form anyway.

If you’re not feeling well or are having problems with your meds, by all means talk to your dr.

Take care.

I have been using only synthroid since my TT 2 1/2 years ago.  I have not had any problems being on this.
