Hypo Before TT Surgery - What About After??

Wow, I dont' know WHY I didn't think about this before now, as I just read Kiplands' post about being Hypo after her TT but now I am thinking of it and totally worried, confused, wow, freaking out.

So, I have been Hypo for like 16 yrs... right now I am on 100 mg synthroid. Dr said even with my thyroid out my meds would prob not change much as I am on a pretty good does. He said that my thryoid is pretty much pooey'd out on my all together anyway.  They also told me to stay ON my meds up to and including my surgery day. So, my thought is, I prob won't go through bad Hypo changes, or will I? after the TT surgery??  I guess they will have to regulate my meds some, but will it be a lot? or can you tell w/out bloodwork and stuff? TOTALLY didnt' think of this prior to now. Praying I won't have bad Hypo problems afterwords.... eeck!

my levels were normal before surgery....as far as I know they always had been. My TSH is now 28.8 after surgery but for some reason Im not having the nightmares of ALL the problems being hypo. Other then feeling a little rundown....go figure.

Seems to reason that if your thyroid is sick and not working before surgery there is really no reason for you to crash and burn after surgery. You'd think that having that nasty organ out of your body you would only feel somewhat better....does that make sense??

Rhonda-who probably has NO clue what shes talking about LOL

Wonder why he is having you go off the meds? I read that a lot here, I just don't understand it? I know my situation is different as I am not dealing with cancer or bad nodules and RAI and stuff, but I would think they would want you as regulated as possible going in? I am really clueless on this. I asked my Dr and his nurse (twice) about taking my meds (Rx ones that is) and they told me repeatedly to stay on them all. I take my synthroid and a blood pressure med and multi vit. They said the only thing to avoid was naturopathic meds and motrin/advil type pain killers and asprin. So, I guess it just depends egh?
Good luck! Hope things go smoothly for you! Be sure to keep us updated.

I'm worried about the same problem...I am hypo as well...just happened this year as a result of radioactive iodine treatment for my hyperactive thyroid.  My doc put me on 25 mg of Cytomel a day which he just lowered.  He had me on a higher dosage than I needed because he wanted to see if he could try ans shrink the mass, but now that I'm having it removed and it didn't shrink he said that he wanted me to take half of that dosage.  He also advised me not to take the medication for a few days prior to the surgery.  I'm confused as to what will happen after I have the surgery on Tuesday.  I will be having a partial thyroidectomy along with the mass removed...

I slept great last night.  Propped up with ice on my neck.  My voice is still not good, but I think it's just going to take time.  I decided that yes - it's time to slow down.  I'm pushing myself too much!!  You just remember that after YOUR surgery as well.  Remember that even though you may feel fine, you're still healing.  I needed to kick myself in the behind for that one.  Try not to worry so much about it.  I'm thinking that since you'll be on your meds, you'll be fine.
Take care!!

You hit it on the head girl. I am really worried more than anything about getting more "confused". I am already so slow.... can't remember my own name 1/2 the time..... makes me crazy. I really don't have too much trouble with the tiredness or weight issues although it does scare me too that those may pop up now. Again, the Dr said my thyroid is shot anyway, not doing much of anything but growing fast and taking up space so the meds prob won't change much. I just worry that I will go into a "hypo shock" sort of state and have concentration problems and stuff. However, since he will not be taking me off my meds, that might not happen, right? UGH this is making me stressed.

Sorry your hurting again. PLEASE slow down and take it easy girl!! Hope you get some good help and some rest ....

HUGS and thanks again.

My doc said that normally people that have their thyroid removed will notice the hypo symptoms by about the 4th week.  What that meant to me is that the TSH that had already been produced will "keep" for that long.  They didn't put me on any meds, and won't until after the RAI.  Will you be going on your meds right after surgery?  If so, I don't think you have a thing to worry about.  I was joking a bit about the brain fog.  I really thing it's sleep deprivation at this point.  I'm going to try sleeping propped up again tonight with an ice pack on my neck again.  My throat is really sore again, and I think it's from the snoring that's going on now.  Hopefully, I'll get a good nights rest and not keep the rest of the house awake!!
