Seeing the surgeon on Monday

Hi ,,, I need some helpful questions to ask the surgeon on Monday. I know they are removing it all, saw some follicular cells though they expect me to be okay... I am frightened of the pain, but after that, how long before you coudl do normal household clean-up..... Do i need to have someone around for the  first few days.

But primarily, please send me some questions to ask the Doctor.  My surgeon is a specialist in endocrinolgy surgery, in a major Hospital,  so I know he is up with all methods. But the more I know, the easier it will be for me. Thanks so much. Bobbi

I was very tired and exhausted for two weeks after surgery. I couldnt return to work as quick as I had hoped. I had a tt for graves. My neck was sore, but not unbearablely so. The pain meds made me naucous so I stopped taking them right away. You wont be able to turn your head to drive very well the first week. I didnt feel like I could check my blind spots like I needed to. I might mention we had a tornado the day I got home from the hospital and that didnt help!
As far as the doctor goes.......sounds like he is a specialist and that's good. My doctor monitored my nerves with some sort of intstuments during the procedure to ensure he didnt harm my vocal cords. He made me very aware that it was really important to do that. It was considered out patient surgery because I went home right before the 23 hour mark. I spent the night in the hospital and the doctor came and took out the drain tube early in the morning and that was that. My surgery took about 2 hours and everything went fine. Dont worry about it....easily said, now that mine is over. I had never had any kind of surgery before this and I did well. I am sure you will do just great. Take care.

I did not have any complications after surgery, but was only kept due to a thyroid storm I had hit before I had the surgery.

Once home I was moving around that evening. Yes it was a little painful (neck area), but the pain medication helped with that. I only had to take the pain med. for about 1 1/2 days, after that just a little sore in the area, but that was it.

No, you will not want to turn your neck so quickly at first, but the soreness will go away after about 3-4 days. It was really not a big deal for me after the surgery. I even went to the mall the next day...

You will be fine. Good Luck..

What kind of surgery are you having?  Are you having a thyroidectomy, lobectomy?  I have had a lobectomy and it was very easy and relatively painless.  Home on the day after the surgery, up and functioning with a little tiredness on the third day.  By day 5 I was walking three miles and able to fully function with a nap in the afternoon.  I couldn't drive for a while, it is hard to turn your head with stiches...that was the only thing that was an annoyance, though.  Pretty easy surgery.
