SALTY TASTE IN MOUTH, FATIGUE,TIRED/DRY EYES, MONTHS OF WORRY AND NO ANSWERS, PLEASE HELP!

I also have salty taste in mouth and currently am up to monthly injections of b12.  I was also low in vit. d and took 2 rounds of presription vit. d3, 50,000  1xwkly for 8 wks. (1 month apart).   My problems began in May 2010 with fungus growth under my nail, pain in both flanks. Which was puzzling b/c I have had a left nephrectomy.  I did experience some vaginal burning, and feeling of frequency to urinate, but was negative for uti, but for trace amount of bacteria.  I was put on antibiotics, bactrim, and them macrobid with pyridum and the problem resolved.  By july I was so weak I could barely walk.  I was told i had walking pneumonia, put on another round of antibiotics~ z pack x 5 days, then generic biaxin (clarithromicin)~horrible drug! never take it again~  symptoms got worse I began to get mental fatigue, my balance was off, my memory was going.  Labs, xrays show nothing, therefore I again am told it's anxiety/depression. lol
By the end of July I'm gasping for air 24/7 and the constant deep breathing is causing chest pain~  Diagnosis.. Panic Attack!, all labs normal at 3 er visits, and several pc visits, including my oxygen levels taken from artery blood.  So, I try to convince myself that it's all in my head, as the doctors are convinced it is.  But it still didn't go away.  I see pulmonologist, he finds nothing wrong, not even copd!
So, between my moments of clarity, I began researching and had all symptoms of b12 deficiency.  Due to my levels being normal when my doc found my d deficiency, he was reluctant to give me b12, but did at my insistance.  My shortness of breath immediantly went away,  the fungal infection went away after i began the vitamin d.  gradually i felt i had a bit more energy and my balance was better.  I was diagnosed with carpel tunnel in 2005 after 2 nerve conduction studies, 2 neurologists, and 1 neurosurgeon.  I declined to have the surgery, and guess what!  All the pain, burning, tingling and numbness is gone, completely!   Now, what I'm dealing with is constant feeling of heavy, dry eyes, puffy face/hands, and salty taste in mouth.  And of course I'm still a bit fatigued.   I want to get better, please someone help.  I'm exhausted from trying to diagnose myself.   I feel that it's something to do with my thyroid, but just yesterday my doctor did ultrasound of my th glands and told me they were perfectly normal, and my tsh levels were normal.  He didn't check the t1 and t4, or whatever the others are and told me there was no need to.

I also have a bit of pain, bruised feeling on soles of both feet and in the palms of my hands.   I was concerned that the high vitamin d may have affected the calcium in my blood and could have caused this as well as damage my only kidney!    But he dismissed this and referred back to the labs that he did prior to putting me on vit d and told me my calcium levels were normal.  I haven't had labs done since that time.  Can anyone help me>  thank you

Your symptoms sound just like me.....

Please go to www.parathyroid.com  the parathyroids will not show up on ultrasound, and you have not mentioned the PTH level.

PTH is parathyroid hormone, causes all the symptoms you are mentioning, even the low vitamin D.  They rarely EVER check this until you ask!  I suffered for ten freaking years before I figured it out and had to diagnose my self because they kept saying it was all in my head....bs bs...bs...and more bs.

Taking Vitamin D could be dangerous and causing you MORE symptoms.  When calcium is high in the body, even slightly, the body will dial down the amount of vitamin D in order to protect the body from absorbing too much calcium, too much can cause you to have a stroke or heart attack.

Please read some of my other posts for more info, but I feel you....high calcium also causes kidney problems.....sounds to me like the D supplements are causing you to absorb too much calcium....

Have the Calcium, D, and PTH checked and read all about HYPERPARATHYROIDISM at parathyroid.com  IT is the BEST information out there concerning this little recognized disorder, which simply is a growth on the gland causing over production of the hormone PTH....thus telling the body it is low on calcium when it is not....it will pull calcium from the bones to satisfy itself and this causes PAIN>  I suffered from years of nuero symptoms, numbness, tingling, etc, etc.  YEa, they said it was depression, fibro, chronic fatique, IBS, etc.

Find out what your exact calcium reading was, and have another test, it changes daily with a disorder, and may be "normal at times and borderline high at times....several tests need to be done.  I bet since you have been on D it is elevated right now.

Please read about the dangers of adding D with high calcium, it can kill you.  The body does not function well in the 10 range or higher of calcium, cut off for top of scale is 10.2.  Mine never got above 10.4, and was 10.1 a few times, and they told me it was NORMAL....and barely high....again call bs bs bs.....Find out what your numbers are EXACTLY>

I have HPTH, plus Thyroid Cancer, and my thyroid levels never got above 2.5 and 1.4 for the Free T4, all within..."normal" ranges.  They would not have found this until it was too late if I did not keep researching my own symptoms and asking for the dam test.

I am SO ANGRY right now, been sick for a decade, just found out about the cancer yesterday, and the HPTH two months ago, meet with the oncology surgeon next week.
I trusted my doctors opinions of NORMAL ranges for far too long....now look.

Normal needs to be looked at with MANY parameters, not individual tests, its a combination of tests that tell the story.  Such as low D and slightly high Calcium....my D was only 11.  First thing my primary care said was:  "Are you being treated for the low D?"

What a ******* thing to ask me with high calcium!!  and she knew my calcium was "barely high"...bs bs, bs...again.  Sure am glad I researched that or I might be dead already by listening to her.

Sincerely,
Lori

I had problems with dry eyes, fatigue and achiness and was diagnosed with CFS.  I also have an underactive thyroid which I think is related to this.  I do not know if this is any hellp to yourself, but I am well enough now and take Armour (underactive thyroid) and Low Dose Naltrexone (CFS) and my symptoms have more or less gone.

Your symptoms indicate hypothyroidism.  What was the exact level of your vitamin D?  It's not unusual for a patient to be given high doses of vitamin D for short periods of time.  Yes, it can be toxic, but it's rare.  I've no doubt your doctor will check it periodically to make sure you aren't getting too much.

Have you had your thyroid levels tested recently?  The tests needed are TSH, Free T3 and Free T4; don't accept just TSH.  If you have results for those tests, please post them, along with the reference ranges.  The reference ranges vary from lab to lab, so must come from your own report.

You do have to research your symptoms and insist on the proper testing, as most doctors will only do certain tests.

Please keep in mind the thyroid and parathyroids are totally unrelated to each other; while they share close proximity in the body, their functions are completely different.

The majority of the fungus issues I had began to clear once I got on thyroid med and my levels started coming up.  I'm also on weekly B12 injections.

Hypothyroidism, synthroid (thyroid supplement), vitamin D, calcitonin may all cause salty taste in mouth.

Zinc and vitamin B12 deficiency may also be the cause.

Been a mess for 2 yrs. All the symptoms and then some. Holistic Doc thinks it's adrenal, pituitary. Going to an Endo crin in Nov. Went once along time ago. Told me I have beginning of Hoshimotos (sp?) General Doc and others told me I'm at the low end but within range. Been researching and researching like all of u. I'm convinced it is parathyroid, pituitary,adrenal,pancreatic........or the dreaded Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. Good luck to all and hope you or I do not have the later.
