hypothyroid and periods

i was recently diagnosed as hypothyroid. i have all the typical symptoms -- weight gain, fatigue, dry hair, slow reflexes, choking feeling around my throat, slightly abnormally high tsh levels. this week i'll find out how high my antibodies are.

but also, over the past year my periods have gotten lighter and lighter. still perfectly regular, every 30 days, but definitely lighter than i think they should be. anyone else have this from being hypothyroid? i suspect its caused by a change in hormone levels due to being hypothyroid, but im worried maybe something else is wrong...like my ovaries are failing or something. any feedback would be appreciated!

Absolutely agree!!!!! All of us hypo people are different.  Mine have always been inconsistent .  But now w synthroid(which I hate taking(anxiety) it is irregular, long and heavy! Ugh! Drs, seem to think they have the answers to hypothyroidism, but most haven't lived it.

my periods went very light when i was hypo (before i was diagnosed) - i was on the pill but they only lasted 2 days. with treatment (with synthroid) they have become a bit heavier - so hopefully yours (and mine!) will become more normal with treatment!
ps the doctor didnt believe me when i said mine were light coz she reckoned hypo people get heavier periods - but it seems to me that everyone is different!

You may also be pre or menopausal have you had your fsh etc. levels checked?  I had a friend whose periods totally stopped at 35yrs old.  She was premenopausal in her 20's with period lightening and then no periods.

Having problems with your periods are more the norm than not with thyroid problems.  When I was hyper I hardly ever had them and they lasted no time.  It was sooooo nice!  Then as I went hypo they came and went, light, heavy, you name it, was never the same.  But now that my levels are back to normal mine are horrible.  My last 2 came less than 3 weeks apart, first one lasted 4 days and last one lasted 8 days.  For quite a while now I have been chained to the house for the duration.  Can't even go out in the yard or work in the garden.

Don't know if all of mine now have anything to do with thyroid anymore or are just genetic.  The only thing I can really tell you for sure is that thyroid definitely does make a difference in them and that I would gladly trade with you! =)
